Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

Characterized by its robust build and distinct facial markings, this medium-sized nocturnal raptor measures between 15.7 and 17.3 inches in length and weighs approximately 14 to 21 ounces. It features a striking dark facial disc outlined by prominent tawny-ochre eyebrows that merge into a warm-colored collar, distinguishing it from related owls. The eyes are a deep dark brown to yellowish-hazel, paired with a powerful horn-colored bill. Its upperparts are a solid, deep chocolate brown, while the underparts display an unbarred, uniform creamy-buff to yellowish-tan coloration. Juvenile individuals display a contrasting appearance, being mostly white or creamy with a dark, mask-like facial disc, taking several months to develop the diagnostic adult plumage.

Geographical distribution: This species is endemic to the southern Neotropics, specifically restricted to the Atlantic Forest region of South America. Its range encompasses southeastern Brazil (from Bahia and Minas Gerais south to Rio Grande do Sul), eastern Paraguay, and the northeastern tip of Argentina in the Misiones Province. Its global distribution is highly congruent with the remaining fragments of the Paranaense forest ecosystem.

Habitat: It primarily populates the canopy and middle strata of primary humid subtropical forests, semi-deciduous woodlands, and gallery forests. While showing a strong preference for pristine, mature forest tracts, it can occasionally adapt to highly degraded secondary forests and edge habitats, provided there are mature trees that offer adequate roosting sites and protection during the day. Its altitudinal range spans from sea level up to 4,900 feet above sea level.

Feeding: As an opportunistic carnivore, its diet relies heavily on a perch-and-pounce hunting strategy executed from mid-level branches. It preys extensively on small mammals, including nocturnal rodents, small arboreal marsupials, and bats. It also supplements its diet with large insects such as beetles and cicadas, as well as terrestrial vertebrates like frogs, lizards, and sleeping passerine birds.

Behavior: Strictly nocturnal and crepuscular, it spends the daylight hours roosting close to tree trunks within dense foliage to avoid mobbing by smaller birds. Its vocalization is a diagnostic, low-pitched, rapid series of muffled, accelerating hoots resembling a distant tapping or a frog-like croak, which increases in frequency during the breeding season. It is highly territorial, maintaining a solitary lifestyle or remaining in stable monogamous pairs within a permanent territory.

Nesting: Breeding activity occurs predominantly between August and December. The species nests inside large natural cavities in mature trees formed by decay or previous woodpecker activity. The female lays a clutch of one to two white eggs, which she incubates for about 30 to 35 days while the male hunts and defends the territory. The altricial young remain in the nest cavity for roughly five to six weeks and exhibit prolonged post-fledging dependence, staying near their parents for several months before dispersing.

Conservation status: It is currently classified as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List. Nevertheless, its population density is declining due to the continuous loss and fragmentation of the Atlantic Forest, which directly reduces the abundance of old-growth nesting trees and prey populations.
