Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

Characterized by significant sexual dimorphism, this large member of the Icteridae family displays a striking appearance. Adult males measure between 46 and 48 centimeters in length and weigh around 300 grams, whereas females are substantially smaller, reaching about 37 centimeters and weighing approximately 140 grams. The body plumage is predominantly glossy black, contrasting sharply with a rich chestnut rump and undertail coverts. A key diagnostic feature is the tail, which is mostly bright yellow except for the two dark central feathers, making it highly conspicuous during flight. The bill is heavy, pointed, and ivory-white in color, set against a stunning bright blue iris. A narrow, hair-like crest is present on the crown, though it is often difficult to observe unless the bird is viewed at close range.

Geographical distribution: Occurs widely across the Neotropics of South America, ranging from northern Colombia, Venezuela, Trinidad and Tobago, and the Guianas, southward to northern Argentina, Paraguay, and southern Brazil. It is widely distributed throughout the Amazon Basin and extends westward to the eastern slopes of the Andes in Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia.

Habitat: Prefers lowland humid forests, forest edges, clearings, secondary growth, and agricultural plantations. It adapts well to fragmented landscapes and is frequently encountered in semi-open woodlands, gallery forests, and savannahs with scattered tall trees, generally avoiding the interior of dense, undisturbed primary rainforests in favor of the canopy and sub-canopy layers.

Feeding: Exhibits an omnivorous and opportunistic diet. It actively forages in the forest canopy for a variety of wild fruits, berries, and seeds, and frequently feeds on nectar from large flowers. This diet is supplemented with animal protein, including large invertebrates such as caterpillars, beetles, orthopterans, and spiders, as well as small vertebrates like tree frogs and geckos found among epiphytic bromeliads.

Behavior: Highly gregarious and social, often traveling in noisy, active flocks outside the breeding season. Males are polygynous and perform an extraordinary courtship display; they bow deeply forward on a branch until almost upside down, rustling their wings and spreading their yellow tails, accompanied by a unique vocalization that consists of a liquid, bubbling gurgle followed by dry, rustling sounds.

Nesting: Breeds colonially in a harem-based polygynous system, where a single dominant male defends a nesting tree containing several females. The colonies are established in tall, isolated trees to deter predators. The female solely constructs a remarkable, pendulous woven pouch nest, measuring 60 to 125 centimeters in length, made of vines, plant fibers, and grasses. These colonies are often built in close proximity to active wasp nests (Polistes spp.) to deter botflies and other parasites. The clutch typically consists of two pale blue or whitish eggs marked with dark spots, incubated exclusively by the female for 15 to 19 days.

Conservation status: Classified as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List. The species maintains a large and stable population across its extensive geographical range, benefiting from its adaptability to moderately disturbed habitats and secondary forest environments.
