Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

Belongs to a highly specialized group of passerines, measuring approximately 18 to 20 centimeters in total length. This species displays conspicuous sexual dimorphism. The adult male features a vibrant rufous-chestnut crown combined with an eye-catching reddish-orange breast and belly, while its upperparts are dark grayish-brown with distinct dark streaks. Its dark tail is marked by prominent rufous patches on the outer feathers. Conversely, the female is much duller and heavily streaked, showing a cryptic plumage of buffy-brown and grayish tones without the bright orange underparts of the male. Both sexes possess a robust, short, and finely serrated bill designed for shearing foliage, complemented by a striking, bright red to orange-red iris.

Geographical distribution: Occupies a wide latitudinal range in southwestern South America, being primarily distributed throughout Chile from the Atacama Region south to the Magallanes Region. It is also found in the southwestern borderlands of Argentina, ranging from Neuquén province down to northern Santa Cruz province.

Habitat: Occurs across diverse terrestrial landscapes, spanning from coastal sea level up to elevations of around 2,000 meters. It displays a strong preference for semi-open areas, including dense scrublands, sclerophyllous matorral, temperate Nothofagus forest edges, riverine thickets, agricultural borders, suburban gardens, and commercial fruit orchards.

Feeding: Exhibits a predominantly folivorous diet, which is quite uncommon among passerine birds. It feeds selectively on tender buds, young leaves, flowers, and berries of both native and exotic plants. Employing its heavy, serrated mandibles like pruning shears, it easily cuts and masticates fibrous plant tissues, occasionally causing localized damage to agricultural crops and domestic orchards.

Behavior: Typically encountered singly, in pairs, or in small family cohorts during the post-breeding season. The flight pattern is markedly undulating and heavy. It is highly conspicuous due to its unique vocalization, a dry, mechanical, rasping call that sounds remarkably like a creaking door or a fishing reel, which is delivered from exposed perches atop bushes or low trees to defend its territory.

Nesting: The breeding cycle takes place primarily between October and January. The birds construct a shallow, cup-shaped nest, loosely woven from twigs, rootlets, and fine plant fibers, which is typically hidden deep within dense thorny shrubs or low branches of trees. The female lays a clutch of 2 to 4 light blue-green eggs decorated with fine dark brown spots concentrated near the larger end.

Conservation status: Classified as a species of Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Although its global population remains stable, some localized populations face persistent threats due to habitat degradation, urban sprawl, and occasional persecution by farmers who view it as an agricultural pest.
