Description


Is a medium-sized passerine bird characterized by its striking plumage and the absence of an erectile crest on its head. It measures approximately 16.5 centimeters (6.5 inches) in length. The most salient feature of this taxon is its vibrant crimson-red head, throat, and upper bib, which terminates in a distinct point on the breast. This rich red coloration contrasts sharply with its dark charcoal-gray upperparts and immaculate white underparts. Its bill is extremely prominent, being bright yellow, robust, and conical, suited perfectly for cracking seeds. The iris is dark brown, and the legs range from dark gray to black. Juveniles differ significantly from adults, exhibiting a dull brownish-buff head and a dusky bill, which slowly transition to the adult morphology as they mature.

Geographical distribution: Occupies a wide geographical range across central-south South America. It is native to Paraguay, northern Argentina (particularly within the Chaco, Formosa, Santa Fe, and Corrientes provinces), southwestern Brazil (most notably in the Pantanal regions of Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul), and eastern Bolivia. Furthermore, this species was successfully introduced to the Hawaiian Islands during the late 20th century, where self-sustaining wild populations are now well-established on Oahu, Kauai, and Hawaii Island.

Habitat: Is closely associated with freshwater wetland ecosystems. It thrives in marshes, swamps, riparian thickets, lake margins, and seasonally flooded grasslands. The species prefers open or semi-open shrublands and the borders of gallery forests over dense, closed-canopy woodland interiors. It has also adapted well to human-modified landscapes, frequently inhabiting damp pastures, suburban parks, and agricultural margins where permanent freshwater bodies are accessible.

Feeding: Exhibits an omnivorous diet that heavily emphasizes granivorous and insectivorous foraging strategies. It feeds extensively on the seeds of various grasses and herbaceous plants, which it searches for on wet soil or muddy shorelines. To complement this seed diet, it consumes small berries and insects such as ants, beetles, termites, and larvae. Insects are particularly sought after during the breeding season to provide essential proteins for rapidly growing nestlings. Foraging is typically conducted in pairs or small family cohorts.

Behavior: Displays highly social tendencies, often forming cohesive flocks during the non-breeding season, sometimes joining heterospecific groups of other seed-eating birds. It is an active, energetic bird that moves with agile hops along the ground and floating vegetation. Its vocalizations consist of a sweet, melodious, and repetitive song, usually delivered from conspicuous perches early in the morning. During the breeding cycle, pairs become highly territorial, aggressively chasing away intruders and rivals from their immediate nesting domain.

Nesting: Builds a neat, open cup-shaped nest composed of dry grass, twigs, fine rootlets, and plant fibers. This structure is typically concealed at low to medium heights within dense bushes, vine tangles, or low tree branches, often situated directly overhanging water bodies to minimize mammalian predation. The clutch size consists of 2 to 3 eggs, which are pale greenish-white or creamy-white, heavily speckled with dark brown, olive, and gray markings. Incubation is performed primarily by the female for 12 to 14 days, after which both parents actively participate in brooding and feeding the altricial chicks until they fledge.

Conservation status: Is currently evaluated as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Although it experiences persistent capture pressure for the illegal cage-bird trade due to its aesthetic appeal and melodious song, its overall population remains vast, stable, and highly resilient across its extensive geographical distribution, with no immediate major threats posing a risk to the species´ global survival.
