Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

It is a small arboreal passerine distinguished by its compact appearance, relatively large head, and broad, sturdy bill with a slightly hooked tip. Pachyramphus polychopterus exhibits pronounced sexual dimorphism, with males and females showing markedly different plumages. In the nominate subspecies, the adult male displays a glossy black head, nape, back, wings, and tail, contrasting with pale gray to ash-gray underparts. One of its most distinctive field marks is the presence of broad and conspicuous white wing bars, clearly visible both when perched and in flight. The white markings formed by the wing coverts and secondary feathers create a striking contrast against the dark upperparts. Females are much less contrasting, with olive-brown to grayish-brown upperparts, a slightly darker crown, and warm buff to cinnamon underparts. Juveniles show duller plumages and gradually acquire adult characteristics as they mature. Its robust silhouette, short neck, and large-headed appearance make it a distinctive bird among South American woodland species.

Geographic distribution: The species is widely distributed across much of South America east of the Andes. The nominate subspecies occurs mainly in southern and southeastern Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay, and northeastern Argentina, where it inhabits areas associated with the Atlantic Forest, gallery forests, and adjacent wooded habitats. Additional subspecies extend the overall range into tropical and subtropical regions of the continent. In some areas, seasonal movements may occur in response to breeding activities and food availability, although many populations are resident or undertake only short-distance local movements.

Habitat: It inhabits a variety of forests, woodland edges, secondary growth, gallery forests, and mature wooded habitats, typically occupying the middle and upper strata of the vegetation. It is frequently found in areas with dense tree cover, natural clearings, and well-developed forest edges. The species may also occur in large parks, wooded rural properties, and landscapes that retain significant native vegetation. It generally avoids completely open habitats and spends most of its time among branches and treetops, where it often remains partially concealed by foliage.

Diet: Its diet is primarily insectivorous, consisting of beetles, caterpillars, ants, termites, true bugs, spiders, and a wide variety of other small arthropods. Small fruits and berries are occasionally consumed when available. Individuals forage carefully among leaves, twigs, and clusters of vegetation, capturing prey through short sallies or gleaning insects directly from surfaces. The relatively strong and broad bill allows the species to handle prey of different sizes efficiently.

Behavior: It is usually observed alone or in pairs, although it frequently joins mixed-species insectivorous flocks, particularly outside the breeding season. Its movements are deliberate and methodical as it searches through foliage, interrupted by brief flights to seize prey. While not especially vocal, it produces soft whistles, clear notes, and short calls that often reveal its presence. During the breeding season, pairs establish territories and become more secretive. Because it spends much of its time high in the canopy, the species often goes unnoticed even in places where it is relatively common.

Breeding: Breeding generally takes place during spring and summer. The species constructs a distinctive enclosed nest, globular or slightly elongated in shape, suspended from slender branches several meters above the ground. The nest is woven from plant fibers, dry leaves, mosses, lichens, bark fragments, and other lightweight materials. The entrance is usually located on the side and is often protected by an overhanging extension of nesting material. Clutches typically contain two or three eggs. Both sexes participate actively in nest construction, incubation, and chick rearing. Young birds remain dependent on parental care for a period after fledging while completing their development.

Conservation status: Globally, the species is classified as Least Concern (LC) due to its broad distribution and the apparent stability of much of its population. Nevertheless, local populations may be affected by native forest loss, habitat fragmentation, and the reduction of ecological corridors. The preservation of continuous forests, riparian woodlands, and structurally diverse natural habitats is essential for ensuring the long-term survival of the species.
