Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

Is a medium-sized passerine bird belonging to the tyrant flycatcher family Tyrannidae, measuring approximately 21 to 23 centimeters in total length. It is easily identified by its striking head pattern, featuring a solid black crown sharply bordered by a prominent white supercilium that wraps around to meet at the nape, creating a crowned appearance. The upperparts are a dull grayish-brown, contrasting with the mostly whitish underparts which exhibit faint dark streaking on the breast. Its wings are dark with conspicuous white wing bars that become highly visible in flight, matching the distinctive white outer feathers of its tail. The bill is strong, straight, and black, while the legs are also dark and robust, built for terrestrial activity and perching.

Geographical distribution: This species is native to the southern cone of South America. Its breeding grounds are primarily restricted to central and southern Argentina, encompassing the Patagonian steppes and pampas. During the austral winter, it undergoes a northern migration, traveling to northern Argentina, western Uruguay, the Chaco region of Paraguay, and southernmost Brazil, specifically the state of Rio Grande do Sul.

Habitat: It primarily inhabits open, semi-arid environments, including the Patagonian shrub-steppes, the Monte desert, and dry Chaco woodlands. It shows a strong preference for open grasslands, xerophytic scrublands, and savanna-like ecosystems with scattered, low-growing woody vegetation. It avoids dense humid forests and heavily forested areas, requiring open spaces and elevated perches such as fence posts or isolated bushes to effectively scan for food.

Feeding: Its diet is strictly insectivorous, consisting of a wide variety of terrestrial and aerial invertebrates, such as beetles, grasshoppers, ants, and other insects. It employs a sit-and-wait foraging strategy, scanning the ground from prominent perches before making rapid, low-glide descents to capture prey on the soil, or executing brief aerial sallies to snatch insects mid-air before returning to its perch.

Behavior: It is typically observed singly or in pairs during the breeding season, though it may form small, loose flocks or associate with other ground-tyrants during winter migration. It is an alert and territorial bird, spending much of its time perched on high branches of low shrubs to monitor its territory. Its flight is direct, low, and somewhat undulating, characterized by deliberate, rhythmic wingbeats.

Nesting: It constructs an open, cup-shaped nest made of thin twigs, rootlets, and dry grass. The interior chamber is meticulously lined with soft feathers, animal hair, and wool to provide insulation. The nest is typically situated at low to medium heights, well-concealed within the thorny branches of native shrubs. The female lays a clutch of 2 to 3 eggs, which are creamy white with distinct brownish-red spots concentrated near the larger end. Both parents actively defend the nesting site and share duties in incubating and feeding the altricial chicks.

Conservation status: It is classified as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Although its global population size has not been precisely quantified, the species has a large geographic range and is considered relatively common. However, localized populations face potential threats from habitat conversion and degradation caused by agricultural expansion, intensive livestock grazing, and wildfires in the dry scrublands.
