It exhibits a maximum carapace width ranging typically between 30 and 40 millimeters in fully grown adult specimens. The dorsal coloration displays remarkable variation, dominated by shades of dark brown, dull gray, and olive green, and occasionally reddish-purple hues, whereas the ventral region is notably lighter. Adult males show conspicuous sexual dimorphism, featuring unequal, robust chelipeds (claws) that are significantly larger than those of females, utilized primarily for territorial defense, complex courtship displays, and social interactions. Their walking legs are densely fringed with setae, which facilitate stable locomotion across soft muddy substrates and under turbulent water flows.
Geographical distribution: This species is widely distributed along the southwestern coast of the Atlantic Ocean, ranging from the state of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, extending southward along the entire coast of Uruguay, and reaching northern Argentine Patagonia, with its southernmost ecological boundary located in the San José Gulf and Valdés Peninsula. This extensive range encompasses key estuarine ecosystems of high ecological relevance, including the Patos Lagoon, the Río de la Plata estuary, and the Bahia Blanca estuary.
Habitat: It primarily inhabits the intertidal zones of estuaries, coastal lagoons, salt marshes, and tidal mudflats composed of fine-grained, muddy, or clayey sediments. Characterized by outstanding euryhaline and eurythermal tolerances, it can withstand extreme variations in salinity—ranging from nearly freshwater to hypersaline conditions—and sharp fluctuations in environmental temperatures. It lives in close association with salt marsh halophytic vegetation, specifically plants of the genera Spartina and Sarcocornia, playing a fundamental role in shaping the physical structure of these coastal wetlands.
Feeding: Operating as an opportunistic omnivore, it feeds primarily on organic detritus and benthic microalgae, functioning as a key detritivore and herbivore within its coastal food web. It processes sediment to extract organic particles, bacteria, and microphytobenthos, while also directly consuming the tissues of salt marsh halophytes. Occasionally, it supplements its diet by preying on small macroinvertebrates, scavenging on carrion, and engaging in density-dependent cannibalism on smaller conspecific juveniles, utilizing its specialized mouthparts to sort organic matter from mineral grains.
Behavior: It is renowned as an ecological engineer due to its intense bioturbation activity, constructing complex, dense networks of subterranean galleries that can reach depths exceeding one meter. This burrowing process dramatically alters the physical and chemical properties of the sediment, promoting oxygenation, nutrient cycling, and sediment transport. Being a semi-terrestrial organism, its daily and seasonal activity patterns are heavily regulated by tidal cycles and ambient temperature; it is highly active on the mudflat surface during spring and summer days, whereas during the cold winter months, it retreats deep into its burrows, entering a state of metabolic dormancy.
Reproduction: The life cycle is strictly seasonal, with reproductive activity concentrated during the spring and summer months. Mating typically takes place within the protection of the burrows or on the surface of the mudflat, during which the male transfers spermatophores to the female. Following internal fertilization, the female carries thousands of eggs beneath her abdominal pleopods, becoming "ovigerous." The egg mass undergoes a distinctive color transition from bright orange when freshly laid to a deep brown color as the embryos develop. To ensure larval survival, ovigerous females migrate toward areas of higher salinity near the open sea to release their planktonic zoea larvae, which undergo development in marine waters before returning to the estuaries as megalopae to settle and metamorphose into benthic recruits.
Conservation status: It is not currently listed under any imminent global threat of extinction and is generally classified as a highly abundant species throughout its native range. Nevertheless, local populations face severe anthropogenic pressures, including estuarine habitat degradation, coastal development, industrial pollution, heavy metal accumulation, and agricultural runoff, highlighting the critical importance of preserving South American salt marsh ecosystems to maintain the ecological functions of these crabs.
