Near the apex of the forewings, small, pale whitish-yellow spots are commonly observed, breaking the monotony of the darker borders. The body is slender and elongated, with a dark abdomen accented by fine, yellow lateral stripes. Its antennae are long, delicate, and terminate in a subtly curved, yellowish-tipped club. Conversely, the larval stage or caterpillar is highly conspicuous, displaying an aposematic pattern of alternating black and bright yellow transverse rings, which functions as an exceptionally effective visual warning against potential predators.
Geographical distribution: This species is native to South America, widely distributed across the eastern slope of the continent. Its presence is thoroughly documented throughout much of the territory of Brazil, stretching from northeastern states down to the southern and southeastern regions. Additionally, its populations extend westward and southward, reaching the moist forested zones of Paraguay and northeastern Argentina, particularly within the Misiones province. Its altitudinal range is predominantly low to moderate, occurring from sea level up to approximately 1000 meters in elevation, always in close association with the humid neotropical biomes that characterize these regions.
Habitat: It primarily inhabits the understory and middle strata of tropical and subtropical rainforests, showing a marked preference for the Atlantic Forest (Mata Atlântica) biome. Nonetheless, it demonstrates surprising ecological plasticity, allowing it to colonize anthropized environments such as urban parks, residential gardens, orchards, and secondary growth forests. The occurrence of this insect is strictly dependent on the availability of its local host plants, thriving in any humid, shaded microclimate where shrubs of the Solanaceae family grow.
Feeding: During its larval phase, this insect maintains a strictly phytophagous and highly specialized diet, feeding almost exclusively on the leaves of plants belonging to the genus Brunfelsia, commonly known as manacá (especially Brunfelsia uniflora). These host plants contain toxic alkaloids that the caterpillar sequesters and stores in its tissues without suffering adverse effects. Upon reaching the adult stage, its diet shifts radically to fluid feeding; individuals frequently visit flowers of various plant families, with a strong preference for Asteraceae and Boraginaceae, from which they extract sugar-rich nectar and pyrrolizidine alkaloids. These chemical compounds are vital not only for their defense mechanism but also for synthesizing essential pheromones used during courtship. Furthermore, male butterflies engage in "mud-puddling" behavior, extracting vital mineral salts and moisture directly from damp soil or bird droppings.
Behavior: It exhibits a notably slow, deliberate, and undulating flight pattern, generally staying at low altitudes, close to the ground or around host shrubs. This seemingly careless and conspicuous flight style is possible due to its aposematic strategy. Owing to the accumulation of plant toxins acquired during larval development, adults are highly unpalatable and potentially toxic to vertebrates, which minimizes predation pressure from birds and lizards. It is a predominantly diurnal organism, remaining active during peak sunlight hours, although it typically seeks shelter beneath broad leaves during rainy days or under extreme temperature conditions.
Reproduction: The reproductive cycle begins with an elaborate aerial courtship during which males release chemical pheromones to attract females. After copulation, the female oviposits gregariously on the underside of young Brunfelsia leaves. The eggs, which are conical and whitish or pale yellow, are deposited in clusters to enhance the survival rate of the early larval stages. Following an incubation period of a few days, small caterpillars hatch and feed communally before dispersing as they mature. After progressing through five larval instars, during which they shed their cuticle, the mature larva seeks a sheltered spot on stems or under leaves to transform into a hanging chrysalis. This pupa displays a brilliant gold or silver coloration with metallic reflections and black markings, an optical design that deters predators by refracting ambient light before the imago finally emerges.
Conservation status: Currently, this species is not evaluated under the global criteria of the IUCN Red List (International Union for Conservation of Nature), meaning it lacks an official international threat category. However, at regional and local levels in South America, it is considered a common species of least concern due to its resilience and adaptability to urban environments where its host plants are cultivated for ornamental purposes. Despite this population stability, massive deforestation of the Atlantic Forest and the use indiscriminate of chemical pesticides in agricultural zones pose ongoing threats that could fragment its wild populations in protected habitats.
