Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

Belongs to the family Picidae and is characterized as a small to medium-sized piciform bird, measuring approximately 16 to 19 centimeters in total length. It displays a highly distinctive plumage pattern, most notably marked by a conspicuous white forehead and crown patch. The nape of the neck features a prominent, vibrant yellow patch that is highly diagnostic. Adult males possess a small red patch in the center of the crown, which is either absent or extremely reduced in females, establishing a subtle yet clear sexual dimorphism. Its back and wings are predominantly black, interrupted by a prominent longitudinal white stripe down the center of the back and white barring on the flight feathers. The underparts exhibit a pale grayish-olive or brownish wash, while the rump is a clean, bright white that contrasts sharply with its dark, barred tail. The bill is robust, grayish-black in color, and perfectly adapted for drilling, complemented by eyes with dark reddish irises.

Geographical distribution: Occupies a wide range across the south-central portion of South America. It is primarily associated with the vast Gran Chaco biome, extending through northern and central Argentina (from Salta and Jujuy south to northern Buenos Aires province), western Paraguay, southeastern Bolivia, and reaching into the extreme southwestern regions of Brazil, particularly in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul. Its distribution is continuous and closely tied to the arid and semi-arid lowlands of these territories.

Habitat: Primarily inhabits semi-arid woodlands, dry forests, wooded savannas, scrubby steppes, and areas heavily dominated by columnar cacti. It is frequently found in the dry Chaco, xerophytic forests, Copernicia palm groves, transitional forest edges, agricultural lands with scattered mature trees, and even rural gardens or degraded suburban areas. It shows a strong preference for the middle and upper canopies of woody vegetation and mature cacti, which offer essential foraging and nesting sites.

Feeding: Exhibits an omnivorous and highly opportunistic diet that adapts to seasonal resource availability. It actively feeds on a wide variety of insects, including ants, termites, beetles, and wood-boring larvae extracted from tree bark and cactus tissue. It also consumes a significant amount of plant matter, particularly cactus fruits, wild figs, berries, and seeds. During the flowering season, this woodpecker is frequently observed feeding on nectar from large flowers, acting as an important ecological seed disperser and localized pollinator in dry ecosystems.

Behavior: Characterized as a highly social and gregarious species, often seen traveling in pairs or small family groups of three to five individuals. It is an active, noisy bird that emits constant vocalizations, characterized as sharp, chattering notes and rhythmic trills used to maintain group cohesion and defend territory. Its flight path is distinctly undulating, typical of most woodpeckers. It utilizes drumming on hollow trunks or dry branches not only to locate food but also as an important acoustic tool for intra-specific communication.

Nesting: Breeding activity occurs primarily between September and January. This species excavates its own nesting cavities using its powerful bill, selecting either large columnar cacti or dead tree trunks and wooden fence posts. The clutch typically consists of 3 to 5 glossy white eggs laid directly on the wood chips at the bottom of the chamber. This species is known to practice cooperative breeding, where helper individuals (often offspring from previous clutches) assist the breeding pair with egg incubation, nest defense, and feeding the nestlings, showcasing a highly developed social structure.

Conservation status: Classified under the category of Least Concern (LC) by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List. Although its habitat faces ongoing pressure and fragmentation from agricultural and cattle ranching expansion in the Chaco region, its populations are currently stable. The species displays remarkable resilience and adaptability to human-altered landscapes, provided some mature trees or cacti are left standing to provide critical resources.
