Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

This medium-sized nocturnal raptor measures approximately 23 to 24 centimeters in length and weighs between 110 and 145 grams. It exhibits a highly cryptic plumage pattern dominated by fine streaks, bars, and vermiculations that closely resemble tree bark. The species displays two distinct color morphs: a more common brownish-gray form and a rarer rufous variation. The facial disc is well-defined, framed by a narrow dark border, and topped by relatively short, inconspicuous ear tufts. Its eyes are characterized by a striking bright yellow iris, which contrasts with a robust, greenish-yellow bill. Diagnostic pale, whitish spots on the outer scapulars form a distinct line across the shoulder, while the wings are marked by subtle pale transverse bands.

Geographical distribution: It is endemic to the eastern slopes of the Southern Andes, occupying a narrow latitudinal belt that ranges from central and southern Bolivia (including Chuquisaca and Tarija departments) southward to northwestern Argentina (specifically within the provinces of Jujuy, Salta, and Tucumán).

Habitat: It is restricted to humid montane forests, specifically the Southern Yungas cloud forests, at elevations ranging from 1,000 to 2,800 meters above sea level. The species shows a strong preference for mature forest stands characterized by Andean alder (Alnus acuminata) and Podocarpus pine (Podocarpus parlatorei), where a high density of epiphytes, mosses, and ferns provides optimal microhabitats and camouflage.

Feeding: Operating primarily as an insectivore, this predator feeds opportunistically on a wide range of large invertebrates, such as beetles, moths, crickets, and spiders. Additionally, it supplements its diet by preying on small vertebrates, including field mice, small songbirds, and occasionally frogs, which it captures by diving from low-level perches within the dense understory.

Behavior: Strictly nocturnal and crepuscular, this owl spends daylight hours roosting close to tree trunks or tucked within dense foliage, relying on its crypsis to avoid detection. Its vocalizations are vital for identification; the territorial song consists of a rapid, slightly descending trill lasting about one to two seconds, repeated at regular intervals to establish territory and attract mates during the breeding season.

Nesting: This species relies entirely on pre-existing tree cavities, utilizing natural hollows in decaying trunks or old woodpecker holes (Picidae). The female does not build a nest structure, instead laying a clutch of 2 to 3 immaculate white eggs directly onto the soft wood debris inside the cavity. Incubation is performed solely by the female for about 26 to 28 days, during which the male assumes the role of primary hunter, provisioning the nesting female and the altricial chicks.

Conservation status: Currently evaluated as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List. However, because its global range is highly restricted and specialized, local populations remain vulnerable to habitat loss and fragmentation caused by agricultural expansion, logging, and seasonal forest fires that destroy the old-growth trees essential for nesting cavities.
