Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

Displays a specialized morphology highly adapted to life in dense marshy environments, featuring a medium-sized body length of approximately 15 to 17 centimeters and weighing between 26 and 30 grams. The most diagnostic physical attribute is its long, stout, and conspicuously decurved bill, which is pale horn-colored or whitish with a darker upper culmen. The dorsal plumage is predominantly dark brown on the crown and back, contrasting sharply with the bright rufous-brown wings and rounded tail. A prominent, bold white supercilium stretches above the dark eye, creating a distinctive facial pattern. The underparts are mostly pure white, fading into brownish-buff or light cinnamon tones on the flanks and undertail coverts. Sexual dimorphism is absent, with both males and females sharing identical plumage.

Geographical distribution: Occupies a relatively restricted range in southeastern South America. This species is found in southern Brazil (specifically within the state of Rio Grande do Sul), throughout Uruguay, and across northeastern Argentina, where it occurs in the provinces of Entre Ríos, Corrientes, Santa Fe, and northeastern Buenos Aires, closely following the basins of the Paraná and Uruguay rivers and the coastal wetlands of the Río de la Plata.

Habitat: Shows an obligate dependency on freshwater and brackish marshes, dense reedbeds, and seasonally flooded tall grasslands. It is strictly associated with dense stands of giant sedges, rushes of the genus Scirpus (particularly Scirpus giganteus), cattails (Typha), and pampas grasses. It rarely leaves the protective cover of these tall, vertical emergent plants, which provide essential shelter, nesting substrates, and foraging grounds.

Feeding: Possesses an insectivorous diet, feeding on a diverse range of marsh-dwelling invertebrates. Its prey includes beetles, spiders, small mollusks, larvae, and tiny crustaceans. It utilizes its specialized curved bill to pry into the leaf axils of reeds, probe decomposing organic matter, and glean food from the crevices of dry stalks or the muddy substrate at the base of marsh vegetation.

Behavior: Exhibits highly secretive, skulking habits, remaining concealed within dense vegetation and making visual observations difficult. It moves deftly by hopping and vertically climbing up and down reed stalks. Despite its elusive nature, its presence is readily revealed by its loud, metallic song, which begins with a rapid series of dry, rattling notes that gradually decelerate and drop in pitch. It is a territorial bird, typically encountered singly or in pairs, maintaining territories year-round.

Nesting: Constructs a remarkably large, spherical or oval nest woven from dry reed leaves, plant fibers, and grasses, securely anchored to several upright stems of marsh plants, usually positioned between 0.5 and 1.5 meters above the water or muddy ground. The nest features a circular side entrance. The female typically lays a clutch of 2 to 3 plain white eggs. Both parents share the responsibilities of incubating the eggs and provisioning the altricial nestlings.

Conservation status: Is currently classified as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Nevertheless, its localized populations are highly vulnerable to habitat degradation. The drainage of wetlands for agricultural conversion, livestock grazing, and coastal real estate development represents a continuous threat to the specialized and fragmented ecosystems this species depends upon.
