It is one of the most characteristic lizards of the Caribbean islands and a notable representative of a group of reptiles adapted to warm, open environments. Leiocephalus carinatus possesses a robust body, a relatively large head, strong limbs, and a long tail that plays an important role in both balance and communication. Coloration is variable but generally consists of shades of brown, gray, olive, and black, often accompanied by darker markings or bands that provide effective camouflage. The scales are distinctly keeled, a feature reflected in the species´ scientific name. Males are usually larger than females and often display more robust heads and stronger color contrasts during the breeding season. Its overall appearance reflects efficient adaptation to terrestrial life in sun-exposed habitats subject to high temperatures.
Geographic Distribution: Its native distribution is centered primarily in the Bahamas, including several major and minor islands throughout the archipelago. Introduced populations also occur in other Caribbean regions and in parts of the southern United States, particularly Florida, where some populations have become established and self-sustaining. Throughout its range, the species occupies a variety of island and coastal habitats and demonstrates considerable ecological flexibility in tropical and subtropical environments.
Habitat: It primarily inhabits coastal scrublands, dry forests, rocky areas, dunes, open habitats with scattered vegetation, urban environments, and human-altered landscapes. It is especially common in locations that provide open basking sites combined with nearby refuges such as rocks, logs, vegetation piles, or ground crevices. The species can occur from coastal zones to relatively dry inland areas. Its tolerance of disturbed habitats has enabled it to thrive in gardens, parks, and suburban settings.
Diet: It has a predominantly carnivorous diet consisting largely of a wide variety of small invertebrates. Common prey includes insects, spiders, beetles, ants, grasshoppers, and other arthropods, although small vertebrates may occasionally be captured when opportunities arise. Small quantities of fruits or other plant material may also be consumed. Its feeding strategy combines active foraging with rapid attacks on visually detected prey. This opportunistic behavior allows it to exploit food resources efficiently across a broad range of habitats.
Behavior: It is a highly active diurnal species that relies on solar heat to regulate body temperature. Throughout the day it moves through open areas searching for food while alternating periods of activity and basking. One of its most distinctive traits is its tail behavior, often holding the tail curled upward or making conspicuous tail movements during territorial and social interactions. Males establish territories and employ visual displays to deter rivals and attract females. When threatened, individuals quickly retreat into vegetation, rock crevices, or other nearby shelters. The species possesses excellent visual acuity and reacts rapidly to potential predators.
Reproduction: Reproductive activity generally occurs during the most favorable seasons of the year, when environmental conditions support greater food availability. Males intensify territorial displays and engage in competitive interactions for access to females. Following mating, females deposit eggs in small nests excavated in sandy or loose soils. Depending on environmental conditions and local climate, multiple clutches may be produced during a single breeding season. Incubation relies entirely on environmental heat, and no parental care is provided after egg laying. Hatchlings emerge fully independent and immediately face numerous environmental challenges and predators.
Conservation Status: Globally, it is generally regarded as a species of Least Concern (LC) due to its relatively broad distribution and the stability of many populations. Nevertheless, some island populations may be affected by habitat loss, urban development, introduced predators, and other environmental pressures. The conservation of coastal and terrestrial island ecosystems remains important for ensuring the long-term persistence of native populations. Monitoring introduced populations is also valuable for understanding their ecological impacts on native communities.
