This hemipteran belongs to the family Coreidae and easily misleads predators due to its hymenopteran-like appearance.
Geographical distribution: Is widely distributed across the Neotropical region, with well-established populations throughout South America. Its most abundant and documented records come from Brazil, spanning from the northeastern regions to the south, including states with high agricultural activity. Its presence has also been recorded in forested and transition biomes of Paraguay, northern Argentina, Bolivia, and warm areas of Colombia and Venezuela. The species´ geographic range is strictly coupled with the availability of its host plants, expanding rapidly in areas where commercial passion fruit plantations are established.
Habitat: Primarily colonizes moist tropical forests, forest edges, secondary growth clearings, and shrubby transition zones. It has adapted exceptionally well to agricultural landscapes, particularly commercial orchards of passion fruit and other wild species within the same botanical family. It prefers environments with moderate to high humidity levels and partial to direct sun exposure, conditions that promote the vigorous growth of the climbing vines it relies upon for shelter, feeding, and development. It is uncommon in dense urban environments, though it can be found in suburban orchards and botanical gardens with abundant native host plants.
Feeding: Classified as a strictly phytophagous and stenophagous insect, showing an obligate or highly specialized relationship with plants in the family Passifloraceae. It feeds mainly on species of the genus Passiflora, such as the yellow passion fruit (Passiflora edulis) and the sweet passion fruit (Passiflora alata). It utilizes its piercing-sucking mouthparts to penetrate the plant tissues of leaves, young stems, flower buds, and developing fruits. During feeding, it extracts sap and vital nutrients while injecting salivary enzymes that cause necrosis in the surrounding plant tissue, often resulting in premature fruit drop and the wilting of terminal shoots.
Behavior: Renowned for its diurnal activity and its extraordinary display of behavioral mimicry. When threatened or attempting to evade predators like birds or lizards, it mimics the erratic flight patterns and rapid antennal vibrations characteristic of stinging hymenopterans. During the warmest hours of the day, it is highly active on the foliage, making short flights between the vines of host plants. If directly disturbed, it may drop to the ground to hide in the leaf litter or release volatile, foul-smelling chemical compounds from its metathoracic scent glands, a common chemical defense mechanism among coreid bugs.
Reproduction: The reproductive cycle begins with courtship and copulation, which typically take place on the underside of leaves or within shaded parts of the host plant. Following fertilization, the female deposits dark-colored, barrel-shaped eggs in small rows or loose clusters on the stems or petioles of Passiflora species. After an incubation period lasting about a week, the first-instar nymphs emerge, displaying bright reddish coloration and highly gregarious behavior to deter potential predators. The nymphal development comprises five distinct instars, during which they undergo gradual morphological changes, slowly losing their gregarious habits and developing wing pads until reaching the adult stage in approximately one month, depending on ambient temperature and nutritional quality.
Conservation status: Has not been officially evaluated under the criteria of the IUCN Red List, meaning it currently lacks a global conservation category. Because it is a common species and is frequently classified as a secondary agricultural pest due to the economic damage it inflicts on passion fruit crops, its populations face no threat of extinction. On the contrary, the expansion of agricultural frontiers and the cultivation of passion fruit species across South America have supported stable and growing populations in several regions.
