Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

Is a small, obscure passerine belonging to the Thraupidae family, characterized by its specialized morphology and notable sexual dimorphism. Adults measure between 4.7 and 5.1 inches (12 to 13 centimeters) in length and weigh around 11 to 15 grams. The male is distinguished by its uniform slate-gray plumage, which is slightly paler on the belly and darker on the remiges and rectrices. Conversely, the female is olive-brown on its upperparts, with a pale, yellowish-white breast and abdomen heavily streaked with dark olive or brownish shafts. The bill is dark, slender, sharp, and pointed, contrasting with the stouter, more conical bills of other seed-eating tanagers.

Geographical distribution: This species is endemic to the Atlantic Forest biome of South America. Its native range extends across southeastern and southern Brazil (from the states of Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo southwards to Rio Grande do Sul), northwestern and eastern Paraguay, and northeastern Argentina, where its presence is almost exclusively restricted to the Misiones Province.

Habitat: It primarily frequents the dense understory of humid subtropical forests, montane forests, and secondary woodlands, ranging from sea level up to 4,600 feet (1,400 meters) in elevation. It exhibits an extremely strong ecological association with native bamboo stands (particularly of the genera Chusquea and Merostachys), which form dense thickets along forest edges and steep slopes.

Feeding: This bird is a specialized granivore, with a diet heavily centered on bamboo seeds. It exhibits an irruptive foraging behavior, gathering in large, nomadic flocks to exploit the synchronous mass flowering and seeding events of bamboo forests. When bamboo seeds are unavailable, it supplements its diet with the seeds of other forest grasses, small berries, and occasionally small invertebrates and insect larvae gleaned from the low foliage.

Behavior: It is a highly secretive and quiet species, spent mostly foraging in the shadows of thick vegetation close to the ground. Males deliver a high-pitched, metallic, and buzzing song from hidden perches within the bamboo canopy to defend temporary territories. Because of its reliance on unpredictable masting events, it exhibits highly nomadic movements, appearing suddenly in areas with abundant food and disappearing once the resource is depleted.

Nesting: Breeding activity is closely tied to food abundance, often triggered by local bamboo seed gluts. It constructs a fragile, open cup nest made of fine grasses, rootlets, and dry bamboo leaves, carefully concealed in dense shrubbery or bamboo forks close to the forest floor. The female lays a clutch of 2 to 3 pale blue-greenish eggs, speckled with dark brown and lavender markings, which she incubates while the male remains vigilant nearby.

Conservation status: It is currently assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Although its local abundance fluctuates wildly due to its nomadic lifestyle, the species remains relatively common within suitable habitat, though long-term survival is dependent on preventing the deforestation and fragmentation of its core Atlantic Forest habitats.
