The dorsal wing surface displays an intricate, mosaic-like pattern of gray, brown, black, and white scales, accented by subtle bluish eyespots that closely mimic the lichen-covered bark of host trees. Conversely, the ventral side of the hindwings is predominantly creamy white with dark margins and distinctive reddish-orange spots, a crucial diagnostic feature that distinguishes this taxon from closely related sympatric species. Sexual dimorphism is minimal, though females tend to exhibit slightly larger dimensions and less contrasting color patterns. Like other members of its family, its forelegs are greatly reduced and non-functional for walking.
Geographical distribution: This lepidopteran is widely distributed across the center-south regions of South America. Its range extends through southeastern and southern Brazil, across the eastern and western regions of Paraguay, throughout northern and central Argentina (reaching as far south as the Buenos Aires province), and across suitable woodland habitats in Uruguay. It is particularly abundant along the riparian corridors of the Paraná and Uruguay river basins.
Habitat: Primarily inhabits gallery forests, semi-deciduous woodlands, humid forest edges, and transitional scrublands. It is highly adaptable and frequently encountered in disturbed ecosystems, such as urban parks, botanical gardens, and agricultural orchards containing patches of native flora. The species depends on mature trees with wide trunks, which provide the necessary vertical substrates for crypsis and territorial perching.
Feeding: As an adult, this butterfly rarely visits flowers for nectar. Instead, its proboscis is adapted to draw nutrients from fermenting fruits, oozing tree sap, damp soil high in dissolved mineral salts, and decommissioning organic matter, including animal feces. In contrast, the caterpillars are highly specialized herbivores that feed exclusively on the foliage of the Euphorbiaceae family, showing a strict preference for vines within the genus Dalechampia, particularly Dalechampia triphylla.
Behavior: Demonstrates highly territorial and diurnal habits. Males typically perch vertically on tree trunks in a characteristic head-down position with their wings spread flat against the bark, blending seamlessly with their surroundings. When a rival male or intruder flies near, the resident male launches a rapid aerial pursuit, producing a distinct clicking or cracking sound. This noise is generated by a specialized anatomical mechanism involving modified veins on the forewings and is used both for territorial defense and during courtship interactions.
Reproduction: Following a successful courtship display, fertilized females search for suitable host plants to deposit their eggs. The eggs are laid singly on the underside of young leaves of Dalechampia species. The emerging larvae are solitary, dark-colored, and adorned with branched spines along their bodies, which serve as an effective physical deterrent against predators such as ants and wasps. After undergoing several instars, the mature caterpillar pupates, forming a pendent chrysalis that ranges in color from green to brown, mimicry that protects it from predation until the adult butterfly emerges.
Conservation status: This species has not yet been globally assessed by the IUCN Red List. Locally, it is classified as a species of Least Concern or stable population status, as it remains highly abundant across its native range and adapts well to urban forest remnants and human-modified landscapes containing its larval host plants.
