Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

This is a large and robustly built bird of prey characterized by its broad wings and remarkably short, wedge-shaped tail. It measures between 46 and 58 centimeters in length, boasting an impressive wingspan of 115 to 140 centimeters. The adult plumage displays a distinctive slate gray to dark blue-gray on the upperparts, contrasting sharply with the pristine white underparts, which may occasionally exhibit fine gray barring on the flanks and thighs. A diagnostic field mark is the conspicuous rufous or chestnut patch on the shoulders (lesser wing coverts). Its tail is primarily white with a broad black subterminal band and a narrow white tip, creating a striking pattern during flight. Juvenile birds look drastically different, wearing a dark blackish-brown plumage with varying amounts of buff mottling on the breast, and a grayish tail with numerous thin, dark bars, taking several years to acquire the definitive adult coloration.

Geographical distribution: It ranges extensively across the Americas, originating from southern Texas in the United States and northern Mexico, extending southward through Central America in a somewhat patchy distribution, and expanding widely across South America. It is commonly found throughout Colombia, Venezuela, Brazil, Bolivia, Paraguay, Uruguay, and reaches its southernmost breeding limits in the temperate pampas of central Argentina. It is also resident in some Caribbean islands, particularly within the Netherlands Antilles.

Habitat: This raptor preferentially occupies open and semi-open biomes where trees are scattered or absent. It is highly associated with the Cerrado, the seasonally flooded savannas of the Llanos in Colombia and Venezuela, lowland grasslands, xerophytic scrublands, agricultural pastures, and coastal plains. It strictly avoids dense humid tropical forests and continuous closed-canopy woodlands, as it requires wide, unobstructed vistas to hunt effectively from high perches or while soaring.

Feeding: It is an opportunistic and highly versatile predator. Its diverse diet encompasses a wide range of vertebrates and invertebrates, including small mammals such as rodents and rabbits, reptiles like snakes and lizards, amphibians, medium-sized birds, and large insects such as grasshoppers, beetles, and cicadas. Notably, it exhibits a pyrophilic foraging strategy, frequently gathering in significant numbers near wildfires or agricultural burns to capture fleeing prey driven out by the smoke and flames.

Behavior: It is known for its magnificent soaring flight, utilizing thermal updrafts to glide effortlessly at great heights, holding its wings in a slight dihedral or "V" shape. It is highly skilled at wind-hovering, maintaining a fixed position in the air while scanning the ground below for movement. While it is predominantly solitary or found in pairs, it may temporarily aggregate in larger groups at rich food sources. It utilizes utility poles, fence posts, and isolated trees as strategic hunting perches.

Nesting: It constructs a bulky, platform-like nest made of thorny sticks and twigs, lined internally with green leaves, fresh grass, and fine bark. The nest is typically situated at low to moderate heights in thorny shrubs, cacti, isolated trees, or occasionally directly on the ground in dense grass if elevated sites are unavailable. The clutch usually consists of 1 to 3 white eggs, which are sometimes faintly speckled with brown spots. Incubation is performed mainly by the female and lasts about 30 to 32 days, after which both parents actively participate in provisioning and defending the young until they fledge.

Conservation status: It is currently classified as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Although it maintains a vast geographic distribution and stable populations across most of its South American range, certain localized populations face pressures due to habitat loss driven by intensive agriculture, pesticide exposure that depletes prey populations, and collisions with power lines or wind turbines.
