Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

This is one of the smallest birds of prey in the Western Hemisphere, measuring between 7.8 and 9.1 inches (20 to 23 centimeters) in length and weighing merely 2.8 to 3.5 ounces (80 to 100 grams). It exhibits a deep charcoal-gray to blackish dorsal plumage that contrasts sharply with its pristine white underparts. A highly diagnostic feature is the creamy yellow wash on its forehead and cheeks, accompanied by a rich rufous-chestnut collar on the hindneck and flanks. The eyes of mature individuals feature a striking bright red iris, while the short, unfeathered tarsi are deep yellow. Juveniles differ by having brownish scaling on their back feathers and a slightly streaked chest.

Geographical distribution: It is widely distributed but locally patchy across Central and South America. Its northern range limits reach southern Central America, with documented breeding populations in Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama. In South America, its continuous and discontinuous distribution spans Colombia, Venezuela, the Guianas, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Paraguay, northern Argentina, and across most of the territory of Brazil. Due to deforestation, it has recently expanded its range into previously unsuitable forested regions.

Habitat: This raptor primarily colonizes open and semi-open terrestrial ecosystems. It shows a strong affinity for shrubby savannas, deciduous forest edges, pastures, agricultural fields, suburban green spaces, and heavily disturbed secondary growth areas. It avoids dense, continuous humid forests such as those in the deep Amazon basin, utilizing only deforested corridors to penetrate these zones. It occurs mostly in lowland areas from sea level up to 3,300 feet (1000 meters) in elevation, though rare records exist at higher altitudes.

Feeding: It is a specialized carnivore whose diet relies heavily on small vertebrates and invertebrates. Small lizards, particularly geckos and species of the genus Anolis, constitute the bulk of its prey. It also consumes large insects like grasshoppers, cicadas, and beetles, as well as small passerine birds and small rodents. Its hunting strategy is highly sedentary; it sits patiently on conspicuous perches, scanning the ground below before executing a rapid, direct dive to capture its target with its talons.

Behavior: It is generally a solitary species or is observed in mated pairs during the breeding season. It is highly conspicuous as it spends hours perched on utility wires, fence posts, or the highest bare limbs of isolated trees in open landscapes. Its flight is light, buoyant, and agile, closely resembling that of a falcon or even a tern, characterized by alternating rapid wingbeats and brief glides. While mostly sedentary, it may perform localized seasonal movements linked to prey availability or dry seasons.

Nesting: The reproductive cycle begins with the construction of a small, fragile, cup-like structure made of dry twigs, resembling a pigeon´s nest. This nest is situated in the high forks of trees, usually between 26 and 82 feet (8 to 25 meters) above the ground, sometimes in exotic trees like eucalyptus. The female lays 2 to 3 white eggs heavily blotched with reddish-brown. Incubation lasts approximately 34 to 35 days and is performed almost exclusively by the female, while the male provides all the food. The nestling period lasts about 5 weeks before the young fledge.

Conservation status: It is currently listed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Its global population is estimated to be increasing as a direct consequence of deforestation, which creates open agricultural landscapes suitable for its colonization. No major anthropogenic threats jeopardize the survival of this taxon, although local populations may be vulnerable to the heavy application of chemical pesticides that reduce food availability.
