Belongs to a family of highly specialized parasitic wasps that are easily recognized by their unique, flag-like morphology. This insect features a predominantly matte black body measuring between 7 and 15 millimeters in length. Its most distinctive physical characteristic is its extremely small, laterally compressed, and oval-shaped abdomen or gaster, which is attached remarkably high on the metathorax by a long, slender petiole. The head is adorned with prominent bright blue compound eyes, which serve as a critical diagnostic feature distinguishing this taxon from closely related species in the Evaniidae family. Its hind legs are disproportionately long and spindly, giving it a somewhat spider-like appearance when moving across vertical surfaces. The wings are hyaline, displaying reduced but distinct venation patterns along their margins.
Geographical distribution: This taxon exhibits a cosmopolitan distribution, being widely established across tropical, subtropical, and warm temperate regions worldwide. Its native range is hypothesized to be the Mediterranean region or warm areas of Asia, from which it was accidentally dispersed globally via maritime trade routes. Today, it is naturalized across the Americas, ranging from the southern United States to central Argentina and Chile, as well as throughout Africa, southern Europe, Australia, and various Pacific islands, mirroring the global expansion of its synanthropic hosts.
Habitat: Occurs predominantly in synanthropic environments and heavily urbanized areas. It is frequently encountered inside human structures such as residential homes, food warehouses, basements, sewer systems, restaurants, and hospitals. Within these artificial environments, it occupies dark, humid, and warm microhabitats that host dense populations of pest cockroaches. Outside urban settings, it can also inhabit disturbed ecosystems, secondary forest edges, and shrublands where wild cockroach populations persist, although its population density remains significantly lower in these undisturbed natural habitats.
Feeding: As an adult, this wasp is phytophagous, feeding primarily on liquid carbohydrate sources. It routinely consumes flower nectar, aphid honeydew, and sugary exudates from ripe fruits or tree bark wounds. In stark contrast, the larval stage is strictly carnivorous and highly specialized. The larva is a solitary predator-parasitoid that feeds exclusively inside the oothecae (egg cases) of large cockroach species, particularly those of Periplaneta americana, voraciously devouring all the developing embryos contained within the protective casing.
Behavior: Noted for its highly active and distinctive locomotor patterns. While traversing walls, ceilings, and windows, it constantly pumps its tiny gaster up and down in a rhythmic, flag-waving motion, a behavior believed to play a role in intraspecific communication or to serve as a visual deterrent to potential predators. It is an agile, diurnal flyer with strong positive phototaxis, often drawn to window panes and light sources. It poses absolutely no danger to humans, as it lacks a functional stinger capable of delivering venom; its ovipositor is highly modified solely for drilling through tough egg cases.
Reproduction: The reproductive cycle of this species is obligately linked to the presence of cockroaches from the families Blattidae and Pseudophyllodromiidae. Gravid females actively search for host oothecae using specialized chemical receptors located on their antennae. Once an ootheca, such as that of Periplaneta americana or Blatta orientalis, is located, the female positions herself over the capsule and uses her robust, drill-like ovipositor to penetrate the tough, chitinous outer wall. She then deposits a single, elliptical egg inside one of the cockroach eggs. Upon hatching, the first-instar larva consumes the host egg in which it was laid before proceeding to systematically devour the remaining eggs within the ootheca. After completing its larval development, it pupates inside the hollowed-out ootheca and eventually emerges as a fully formed adult through a neat, circular hole it chews in the casing.
Conservation status: This species is not evaluated (NE) on the IUCN Red List due to its widespread cosmopolitan distribution and high abundance in human-dominated landscapes. It faces no significant threats that could jeopardize its global survival. On the contrary, it is highly valued as a beneficial organism for urban biological pest control, as its natural populations actively suppress pest cockroach infestations in residential and commercial zones, thereby reducing the reliance on synthetic chemical insecticides.
