Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

This is a small, unobtrusive member of the Tyrannidae family, measuring approximately 9.5 to 10.1 centimeters in total length and weighing between 6 and 8 grams. It is characterized by its semi-concealed tawny-rufous or cinnamon crown patch, which is typically flared when the bird is excited or alarmed. The upperparts are mostly olive-grayish brown, contrasting with the pale, grayish-white underparts that show subtle yellowish hues on the flanks and lower abdomen. Its wings feature two distinct buffy or ochraceous wingbars across the coverts, and it possesses a narrow, pale superciliary stripe, a faint white eye-ring, and a slender, dark bill.

Geographical distribution: The species exhibits a highly disjunct distribution across South America. Northern populations inhabit portions of Colombia (primarily the Magdalena and Sinú river valleys) and northern Venezuela (including the Orinoco basin). Southern populations occupy a vast range extending across eastern and southern Brazil (throughout the Caatinga, Cerrado, and Atlantic forest transitions), eastern Bolivia, the chacoan regions of Paraguay, extreme northwestern Uruguay, and northern to central Argentina, reaching as far south as the provinces of Buenos Aires and Córdoba.

Habitat: It primarily occurs in semi-arid and arid landscapes, exhibiting a strong preference for deciduous woodlands, scrubby dry forests, Chaco woodlands, Caatinga biomes, and dense second-growth thickets. It avoids dense, continuous humid rainforests, favoring ecotones, forest edges, and thick undergrowth where low foliage provides ample shelter. Its altitudinal range spans from sea level up to 1200 meters above sea level.

Feeding: Primarily insectivorous, its diet consists of a wide array of small arthropods, including caterpillars, beetles, flies, and ants. It utilizes active foraging techniques, primarily performing short sally-gleans and hover-gleans to pluck prey from the undersides of leaves and twigs in the low-to-mid strata of dense vegetation. During the dry season, it may supplement its insect diet with small berries and seed arils.

Behavior: It is characterized by its highly secretive, skulking nature, making it difficult to spot as it stays within deep, tangled undergrowth. Despite its cryptic behavior, its presence is readily detected by its loud, diagnostic vocalizations, which consist of a rapid, metallic, chattering rattle or trill. It is typically encountered singly or in pairs, moving with quick, agitated hops through low branches while frequently cocking its tail and flicking its wings.

Nesting: Breeding activity occurs mainly between October and February in its southern range. It constructs a small, neatly woven open-cup nest composed of fine plant fibers, dry grasses, mosses, and spiderwebs, which serve to bind the structure securely to a low fork in a shrub or bush, usually situated less than one meter above the ground. The female typically lays 2 to 3 creamy-white eggs speckled with reddish-brown spots near the larger end, incubating them for approximately 13 to 15 days.

Conservation status: It is evaluated as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Although localized populations face threats from habitat destruction and fragmentation driven by agricultural expansion and overgrazing in arid regions, its overall population trend remains stable due to its wide geographic range and ability to tolerate degraded habitats and secondary scrub.
