Description


It is a medium-sized lepidopteran distinguished by its striking wing patterns and agile flight, featuring a wingspan that typically ranges from 50 to 60 millimeters. The dorsal surface of the wings is characterized by a vibrant bright orange or tawny background, intricately patterned with wavy lines, veins, and spots in dark brown to black tones, creating a highly recognizable reticulated appearance. In contrast, the ventral side of the hindwings displays a cryptic, marbled pattern composed of grayish-brown, yellowish, and silvery hues, which provides excellent camouflage against dry leaves and vegetation when the insect rests with closed wings. The caterpillars are visually striking, possessing a cylindrical body colored in black with longitudinal orange and white stripes, adorned with branched, spine-like structures called scoli that serve as a deterrent against potential predators.

Geographical distribution: This species is widely distributed across the southern cone of South America. Its geographical range primarily encompasses countries such as Chile (where it is common from the Coquimbo region south to the Los Lagos region), Argentina, Uruguay, and southern Brazil. This highly adaptable insect can be found across a broad altitudinal gradient, ranging from sea level along the Atlantic and Pacific coasts up to precordilleran zones in the Andes Mountains at elevations exceeding 2,000 meters.

Habitat: It colonizes a diverse array of open and semi-open ecosystems. It is frequently observed in temperate grasslands, steppes, shrublands, coastal dunes, forest edges, and anthropogenically modified environments such as agricultural fields, pastures, urban parks, and domestic gardens. It exhibits a strong preference for areas with high direct sunlight exposure, which favors the growth of its primary larval and adult food plants.

Feeding: The diet of this species shifts dramatically between its developmental stages. In the larval stage, it is a specialized phytophagous feeder, consuming leaves of plants from the Violaceae family, with a strong preference for the genus Viola (including introduced species like Viola arvensis and Viola tricolor), and occasionally feeding on Passifloraceae (Passiflora species) foliage. As adults, they possess a functional proboscis used to feed on nectar from a wide variety of wildflowers, showing a distinct preference for plants within the Asteraceae and Verbenaceae families.

Behavior: This insect exhibits strictly diurnal activity, reaching its peak movement during the warmest hours of the day when sunlight is most intense. Adults are fast, tireless flyers that patrol close to the ground in search of nectar or mates. Males show territorial behaviors, performing continuous patrolling flights over specific vegetated areas to seek out females. To regulate their body temperature, they engage in basking behavior, resting on bare soil, stones, or leaves with their wings fully spread to absorb solar radiation.

Reproduction: It is a multivoltine species, producing several generations throughout the year, with breeding activity peak concentrated from spring to early autumn. Following a brief courtship, the female oviposits ribbed, yellowish eggs individually on the underside of leaves or stems of host plants. The hatched larvae progress through five distinct instars before pupation. The chrysalis is suspended downward, showing a grayish or brown base color adorned with brilliant metallic gold spots, which mimics dew droplets or dry leaves to avoid detection by predators.

Conservation status: It is not currently listed under any threat category on the IUCN Red List and is generally considered of Least Concern (LC) or not formally evaluated in regional assessments. It remains a common and resilient species capable of adapting to human-modified landscapes due to its utilization of ornamental plants; however, the intensive use of chemical pesticides in agricultural and urban areas poses a localized threat to its populations.
