Juvenile individuals exhibit a contrasting color scheme, possessing grayish-brown upperparts, head, and neck, with a white belly and rump, transitioning slowly to the immaculate adult white over a period of two years.
Geographical distribution: Occupies a wide geographic range throughout the coastal and neotropical regions of the Americas. Its breeding territory extends from the southeastern United States (most notably in Florida, Georgia, the Carolinas, and the Gulf Coast), moving southward through both coastal slopes of Mexico, across Central America, and throughout the islands of the Caribbean. In South America, it is widely distributed across the northern portions of the continent, particularly in Colombia, Venezuela, and the Guianas, with occasional vagrants or localized populations moving further inland depending on seasonal precipitation patterns.
Habitat: Utilizes a diverse array of shallow aquatic ecosystems, demonstrating a strong affinity for coastal and estuarine zones, while also successfully colonizing inland freshwater systems. Key habitats include mangrove forests, salt marshes, mudflats, cypress swamps, flooded pastures, and agricultural wetlands such as flooded rice paddies. The species relies heavily on fluctuating water levels; seasonal drying periods are crucial ecological events, as they concentrate prey in shallow depressions, making them highly accessible to the foraging birds.
Feeding: Exhibits an opportunistic carnivorous diet, specializing in the consumption of aquatic macroinvertebrates. Its primary prey consists of crayfish (especially those of the genus Procambarus), along with other decapod crustaceans like crabs, aquatic insects, mollusks, marine worms, and opportunistically, small fish, amphibians, and small snakes. It employs a highly specialized tactile foraging technique, probing its long, curved bill deep into soft sediments or murky waters and using rapid, sweeping lateral movements to detect prey via highly sensitive nerve endings in the bill tip, a mechanism that allows efficient nocturnal feeding.
Behavior: Characterized by an extremely gregarious social structure during all phases of its life cycle. It conducts foraging activities in dense flocks that can number in the hundreds, often associating with other wading birds such as herons, egrets, and spoonbills.
