Description


This small passerine bird is characterized by its slender silhouette and a remarkably long, graduated tail, although it is proportionally shorter than that of its close relatives. It has an average total length of 17 to 18 centimeters. The dorsal plumage is olive-brown with bold, dark blackish-brown longitudinal streaks, which provides outstanding camouflage within the dense marsh vegetation. In contrast, the underparts are mostly whitish with buffy or grayish washes on the flanks and breast. The head features a finely streaked crown, a narrow, inconspicuous white eye-ring, and dark lores. Its bill is highly bicolored, with a blackish upper mandible and a bright yellow lower mandible, which serves as a key diagnostic feature for field identification. Both sexes look virtually identical, with no obvious sexual dimorphism.

Geographical distribution: This species is restricted to southeastern South America. It is found primarily in southern and southeastern Brazil, in states such as São Paulo, Paraná, Santa Catarina, and Rio Grande do Sul. Furthermore, its range extends to eastern Paraguay and northeastern Argentina, with established records in the provinces of Misiones, Corrientes, and Entre Ríos. Its presence has also been documented in northern Uruguay, confirming its status as a specialist taxon of the Río de la Plata basin and adjacent areas of the Atlantic Forest and Pampas biomes.

Habitat: The habitat of this taxon is strictly tied to open, wet ecosystems. It prefers tall, dense marshy grasslands, peat bogs, and seasonally flooded savannas dominated by tall herbaceous vegetation such as sawgrass and sedges. It avoids heavily grazed areas and mechanized agricultural fields, requiring well-preserved patches of native grasslands where the soil remains moist or saturated with water throughout most of the year.

Feeding: Its diet is omnivorous and opportunistic, shifting according to seasonal resource availability in its wetland environment. During the breeding season, its diet is highly insectivorous, consisting of a wide variety of small arthropods, including beetles, grasshoppers, ants, spiders, and insect larvae gleaned from low vegetation or directly from the muddy ground. Outside the breeding season, it supplements its diet by consuming seeds of native grasses, which it processes efficiently using its strong, conical bill.

Behavior: This is a highly secretive species with predominantly terrestrial and semi-aquatic habits. It usually occurs singly or in monogamous pairs, remaining hidden within the dense cover of tall grasses. When flushed, it prefers to scurry rapidly through the vegetation rather than take flight. During the early morning hours, males will perch on the tips of tall grass stems to deliver their territorial song, a series of metallic, dry, and buzzy notes. Occasionally, they perform short, vertical display flights before dropping back down into the cover.

Nesting: The breeding season takes place during the spring and summer months. The nest is a deep, open cup woven from dry grass blades, fine roots, and plant fibers. It is placed low to the ground, usually suspended within a dense clump of grass or nestled near the damp ground to prevent detection by predators. The clutch typically consists of 2 to 3 white eggs, speckled with dark brown or blackish spots clustered around the larger end. Incubation is performed mostly by the female and lasts for about 12 to 14 days.

Conservation status: Globally, the species is currently listed as Least Concern (LC) by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). However, at local and regional levels, it is considered vulnerable or threatened due to its high habitat specificity. Populations are facing severe fragmentation caused by the draining of wetlands, the expansion of soybean agriculture, intensive cattle ranching, and the establishment of monoculture forestry plantations of pine and eucalyptus.
