Belongs to one of the most imposing families of nocturnal lepidopterans in the American continent, standing out for its remarkable wingspan that ranges from 80 to 174 millimeters, with females being significantly larger than males. It exhibits pronounced sexual dimorphism in both size and coloration; males feature a wing pattern dominated by bright yellow heavily ornamented with purplish-brown, pinkish-red bands, and dark speckles, along with strongly bipectinate antennae. Females, in contrast, display a more uniform and cleaner yellow hue, with a reduced number of purplish markings and noticeably simpler, filiform antennae. The larva is a robust and highly polymorphic organism, capable of presenting in color morphs of light green, dark brown, or even blackish, characterized by having white spiracles bordered with black and large yellow or orange spinose tubercles on the thorax.
Geographical distribution: Is widely distributed throughout the American continent, spanning a vast latitudinal range from southern Canada (particularly in the province of Ontario) and crossing much of the eastern and central United States, from the New England regions south to Florida and west to the plains of Texas and Nebraska. South of its distribution, its presence is recorded through Mexico, entering various countries of Central America, and reaching temperate and tropical regions of South America, with stable populations reported in nations such as Brazil, Paraguay, and northern Argentina, where subspecies adapted to southern conditions are usually registered.
Habitat: Inhabits a diversity of forested ecosystems and transition zones, showing a clear preference for temperate deciduous forests, mixed woodlands, pine barrens, and secondary jungles. It is an organism with a remarkable capacity for adaptation that allows it to colonize anthropized ecosystems, being commonly found in urban parks, wooded suburban areas, forest plantations, and orchards, provided that suitable host trees are present and there is low extreme light disturbance to interfere with its biological cycles.
Feeding: Manifests a sharp difference in dietary habits depending on the stage of its life cycle. During its adult stage, this lepidopteran has a vestigial and completely atrophied mouthpart apparatus, which prevents it from feeding, relying exclusively on fat reserves accumulated during its larval stage to survive and reproduce. Conversely, the larval phase is extremely polyphagous and voraciously consumes the foliage of a wide variety of trees and shrubs, showing a special predilection for conifers such as pine (Pinus), and deciduous trees like oak (Quercus), maple (Acer), sweetgum (Liquidambar styraciflua), sassafras (Sassafras albidum), and walnut (Juglans).
Behavior: Manifests strictly nocturnal and crepuscular habits, initiating its flight activity a few hours after dusk. Males are highly active fliers and demonstrate a strong attraction to artificial light sources (positive phototaxis), while females tend to be more sedentary, flying shorter distances mainly after completing copulation to search for suitable oviposition sites. Caterpillars are solitary in habit during all stages of development; when they reach maturity at the end of the fifth instar, they actively descend from the host trees and move across the ground looking for a soft substrate to burrow.
Reproduction: The reproductive process is governed by the emission of specific chemical signals, where virgin females release potent pheromones during the night to attract males from long distances. Mating typically occurs in the hours before dawn and can last for much of the following day. Subsequently, the female deposits her pale yellow eggs individually or in small groups on both surfaces of the host leaves. After an incubation period of approximately 10 to 15 days, the tiny larvae emerge. Upon completing its growth, the caterpillar does not spin a silken cocoon but burrows into the soil to a depth of a few centimeters to undergo pupation in a bare underground chamber, a state in which the species overwinters (winter diapause) in temperate zones before the emergence of the imago in the following spring or summer.
Conservation status: Is not listed under any global threat category on the IUCN Red List. However, at a regional level, especially in the northeastern United States, an alarming historical decline in its populations has been documented due to forest fragmentation, the indiscriminate use of forest pesticides, severe light pollution that disorients adults, and the introduction of exotic parasitoids such as the tachinid fly Compsilura concinnata, used for the biological control of other pests.
