Lineated Woodpecker

This is a large, striking member of the woodpecker family that measures between 12 and 14 inches (31 to 36 centimeters) in length and weighs from 180 to 264 grams. It displays a predominantly black plumage on its upperparts, wings, and tail. The most diagnostic features include a prominent bright red crest and a distinct white stripe starting at the base of the bill, running down the sides of the neck, and joining on the mantle to form a visible "V" shape on the back. Its underparts are heavily marked with buff and blackish barring. Sexual dimorphism is evident on the head: the male features a red forehead and a red malar stripe, while the female has a black forehead and lacks the red cheek patch, showing dark coloration instead.

Geographical distribution: It is widely distributed throughout the Neotropical region. Its geographic range extends from northern Mexico, southward across all of Central America, and deep into South America, covering countries such as Colombia, Venezuela, the Guianas, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Paraguay, northern Argentina, and most of Brazil. It is absent from high-elevation Andean regions and the extremely arid coastal zones of western South America.

Habitat: This bird occupies a wide variety of forested and semi-open environments. It is commonly found in lowland humid forests, deciduous woodlands, forest edges, tall secondary growth, mangroves, timber plantations, and savannas with scattered trees. It exhibits high tolerance to habitat fragmentation, successfully colonizing agricultural landscapes and wooded suburban areas, provided there are sufficient mature trees or decaying snags available for foraging and breeding.

Feeding: Its diet consists mainly of wood-boring insects, focusing primarily on arboreal ants (particularly of the genus Camponotus) and their larvae, alongside wood-boring beetle larvae. Using its strong, chisel-like bill, it excavates deep cavities in dead or weakened tree trunks, extracting prey with its long, cylindrical, and sticky tongue. It opportunistically supplements this insectivorous diet with wild fruits, seeds from pioneer trees (such as Cecropia species), and occasionally other small invertebrates.

Behavior: It is a highly active and territorial species, typically observed singly or in pairs. It possesses a deeply undulating flight pattern characteristic of the Picidae family. Communication involves loud, resonant, laughing vocalizations and a powerful, rapid drumming sequence that starts with a loud burst and slightly decelerates toward the end. This drumming serves multiple purposes, including territory establishment, courtship, and pair-bond maintenance.

Nesting: The breeding season varies depending on the latitude of its geographic distribution. Both sexes collaborate in excavating a nesting cavity in a dead or soft wood trunk, typically situated at heights ranging from 6 to 90 feet (2 to 27 meters) above the ground. The female lays a clutch of 2 to 4 glossy white eggs. Incubation lasts approximately 15 to 18 days and is shared equally by both parents. Once hatched, the chicks are fed via regurgitation and remain in the cavity for 25 to 30 days before fledging.

Conservation status: It is currently classified as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Its population is considered stable and does not face immediate critical threats due to its extensive geographical distribution and its remarkable capability to adapt to human-modified habitats, such as secondary forests, plantations, and pasturelands with scattered trees.
