Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

A medium-sized, elegant passerine bird measuring approximately 17 to 18 centimeters in total length. This species, is characterized by a mostly uniform slate-gray plumage covering the upperparts, head, and chest. It features a striking and highly diagnostic pure white throat patch that stands out sharply against the gray breast. The lower belly and undertail coverts display a combination of white and rich rufous or cinnamon tones, creating a distinctive tri-colored pattern on its underparts. The wings are a slightly darker shade of gray, while its dark, blackish tail reveals prominent white spots on the tips of the outer rectrices, which are highly conspicuous when the bird is in flight or during territorial displays. The bill is robust, conical, and dark lead-gray in color, adapted for its diet. Its legs and feet are blackish-gray. There is a subtle sexual dimorphism; females tend to exhibit a more brownish-gray wash on their upperparts and breast compared to the cleaner gray of the males. Juveniles are overall duller and browner, with faint streaking on the breast.

Geographical distribution: Occurs widely across the Southern Cone of South America. It is exceptionally common throughout Chile, ranging from the Antofagasta region south to the Aisén region. In Argentina, its distribution spans continuously from the northwestern provinces down to northern and central Patagonia, reaching as far south as Santa Cruz province. It also maintains breeding populations or seasonal records in southern and western Bolivia, western Uruguay, and is recorded as an occasional vagrant in southernmost Brazil, specifically in the state of Rio Grande do Sul.

Habitat: Inhabits a diverse range of open and semi-open environments. It is frequently encountered in xerophytic scrublands, shrubby steppes, forest edges, agricultural fields, pastures, and suburban gardens or urban parks. It exhibits a remarkable altitudinal range, occurring from sea level up to approximately 3000 meters above sea level in the Andean slopes, often performing seasonal altitudinal migrations to lower valleys during the harsh winter months.

Feeding: Maintains an omnivorous diet with a strong emphasis on granivorous food sources. It feeds extensively on grass seeds and various herbaceous plants, which it actively searches for on the ground. During the breeding season, it significantly supplements its diet with small invertebrates, such as insect larvae, beetles, and ants, providing essential protein for developing chicks. It also consumes small wild berries and tender buds from native shrubs.

Behavior: Exhibits highly gregarious habits outside the breeding season, frequently forming large flocks consisting of dozens of individuals, often associating with other finches and sparrows to forage. It moves along the ground using agile hops. It is well known for being one of the earliest birds to sing at dawn, earning it local recognition as an early riser. Its song is a highly melodious, strong, and metallic series of phrases, delivered by males from prominent, elevated perches such as shrub tops or fence posts.

Nesting: The breeding season takes place from spring to mid-summer. It constructs a deep, open-cup nest using twigs, dry grass, and moss for the outer structure, lining the inner cup with softer materials like wool, hair, and feathers to ensure warmth. The nest is typically placed at low to medium heights, concealed within dense foliage of thorny bushes or low trees. A typical clutch consists of 2 to 4 light green or bluish-green eggs, heavily speckled with brown, gray, and olive markings. Incubation is carried out solely by the female for 12 to 14 days, while both parents share the duties of feeding and caring for the chicks.

Conservation status: Is classified under the category of Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Its populations are stable and highly abundant throughout its extensive range, as the species readily adapts to human-modified landscapes that provide suitable open areas for foraging and nesting.
