Description


This neotropical lepidopteran belonging to the family Nymphalidae and the tribe Ithomiini is recognized for its largely transparent or hyaline wings. This transparent effect is produced by a significant reduction in the size and density of the scales on the wing membrane. The wingspan of this species ranges between 55 and 70 millimeters. The margins of both the forewings and hindwings are framed in a dark brown or blackish border, with the wing venation clearly defined in these same dark tones. The subapical region of the forewings displays distinctive translucent yellowish or whitish spots. Its antennae are notably elongated and thin, featuring striking bright yellow or orange tips. The body is exceptionally slender, with a dark abdomen that contrasts subtly with the transparent wings, providing an efficient camouflage when resting amidst the dappled light of the forest understory.

Geographical distribution: This taxon exhibits a wide distribution across the Neotropical region, extending from Mexico and Central America deep into the tropical and subtropical regions of South America. Its geographic range covers countries such as Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Paraguay, northern Argentina, and extensive areas of Brazil, particularly within the Amazon basin and the Atlantic Forest biome.

Habitat: It primarily inhabits the shaded understory of moist tropical rainforests, cloud forests, gallery forests, and secondary woodland habitats in various stages of ecological succession. It is most commonly observed in humid, sheltered environments from sea level up to elevations of approximately 2000 meters. It actively avoids open areas with high solar radiation, relying on the protection offered by dense canopy cover.

Feeding: In its larval stage, this insect is highly host-specific, feeding almost exclusively on the foliage of plants within the family Solanaceae, particularly the genus Solanum. Adult butterflies feed on the nectar of several flowering plants, with a strong preference for members of the families Asteraceae and Boraginaceae (especially Tournefortia species). Nectar feeding provides adults with essential sugars and, crucially, pyrrolizidine alkaloids which are sequestered to serve as chemical defenses against predators.

Behavior: It exhibits a slow, fluttering, and low-altitude flight pattern within the forest understory, which reduces visibility to visual predators. Males frequently cluster in localized areas known as leks to release pheromones that attract females, utilizing chemical compounds synthesized from the acquired alkaloids. By accumulating these toxic substances, both sexes become unpalatable to birds and reptiles, allowing them to participate in extensive Müllerian mimicry rings with other co-occurring ithomiine butterflies.

Reproduction: The reproductive process begins with chemical and tactile courtship displays near the forest floor. After copulation, the female searches for suitable host plants of the family Solanaceae to deposit her eggs, which are laid singly or in small clusters on the underside of young leaves. The eggs are small, ribbed, and have a whitish or pale yellow coloration. Upon hatching, the cylindrical, greenish caterpillars feed continuously, accumulating defensive plant compounds. After undergoing several instars, the larva forms a suspended pupa, which is distinguished by a smooth, reflective surface with a brilliant metallic or golden sheen, from which the adult butterfly will eventually emerge.

Conservation status: Currently, this species has not been formally assessed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and does not appear on the global Red List. Nevertheless, local populations are increasingly threatened by deforestation, habitat fragmentation, and the depletion of larval host plants caused by the expansion of agricultural frontiers and cattle ranching across its native range.
