The head typically ranges from reddish-brown to dark black, supporting dark, filiform antennae that measure up to two-thirds of the total body length. The pronotum is light green, smooth, and slightly convex, while the legs are mostly dark brown or black, adapted for rapid movement across various plant surfaces.
Geographical distribution: Occurs widely across the Neotropical region of South America. It is extremely common and highly documented in Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, Bolivia, Peru, and Colombia. Its range has expanded continuously over recent decades, largely driven by the expansion of agricultural frontiers and the trade of host crops throughout the continent.
Habitat: Thrives predominantly in human-modified landscapes, including intensive agricultural fields, commercial orchards, home gardens, and disturbed grasslands. While showing high ecological plasticity, this species prefers temperate and tropical regions with moderate to high humidity and a constant supply of host plants, avoiding extreme alpine elevations or hyper-arid desert zones.
Feeding: Exhibits a highly polyphagous feeding behavior that differs significantly between developmental stages. Adults are folivorous, feeding on leaves, young shoots, flowers, and fruits of a wide variety of plant families, particularly Cucurbitaceae, Fabaceae, Solanaceae, and Poaceae. In contrast, the subterranean larvae feed strictly on the root systems of both monocots and dicots, displaying a strong preference for the roots of maize (Zea mays), which often leads to severe crop damage.
Behavior: Manifests strictly diurnal activity patterns, with peaks of movement and feeding occurring during the cooler morning and late afternoon hours. It is an active flier capable of short to medium-distance flights to locate fresh feeding sites or escape unfavorable microclimates. When disturbed by physical contact or potential predators, it frequently exhibits thanatosis, dropping off host leaves onto the soil and remaining motionless to blend with the debris.
Reproduction: The reproductive process begins with courtship and mating on the host plant foliage. Following fertilization, the female crawls down to the soil surface to deposit small clutches of pale yellow, elliptical eggs in moist crevices near the roots of suitable hosts. Once hatched, the subterranean larvae progress through three distinct instars over several weeks before constructing an underground pupal cell, completing its development from egg to adult in approximately 30 to 40 days under optimal warm temperatures.
Conservation status: Given its status as a major agricultural pest with highly stable and dense populations, it has not been evaluated by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Rather than facing conservation threats, this species is the focus of intense pest management strategies, including biological control and chemical applications, designed to suppress its populations in agricultural regions.
