On the ventral side, the hindwings display a subtle purplish-brown glaze often accompanied by faint, lighter markings. The body is thick and hairy, with typical clubbed antennae ending in a finely pointed apiculus, characteristic of the Hesperiinae subfamily.
Geographical distribution: Occurs widely throughout the Neotropical region, stretching from southern Mexico through Central America (including countries like Guatemala, Costa Rica, and Panama) and deep into South America, where it is recorded in Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay, and northern Argentina.
Habitat: Thrives in humid tropical forests, secondary forest edges, riverbanks, and transitional shrublands. Additionally, due to the popularity of its host plants in landscaping, it is frequently found in urban environments such as parks and domestic gardens, operating from sea level up to elevations of approximately 1,200 meters.
Feeding: As an adult, this insect is actively nectarivorous, visiting a diverse array of flowering plants within the Asteraceae, Verbenaceae, and Rubiaceae families to fuel its high-energy flight. During its larval stage, it is strictly herbivorous and highly specialized, feeding almost exclusively on the foliage of the Cannaceae family, particularly ornamental and wild species of the genus Canna.
Behavior: Demonstrates a rapid, darting, and erratic flight pattern, usually staying close to the herbaceous layer. Males are known for their territorial perching behavior, sitting on sunny leaves to scan the surroundings for potential mates and defending these spots from intruding males. The caterpillars exhibit a highly specialized protective behavior, using silk threads to roll or fold the leaf margins of their host plant, constructing a secure tube-like shelter where they hide during the day to evade visual predators.
Reproduction: This holometabolous insect initiates its life cycle when the female oviposits individual eggs on the underside of host plant leaves. The eggs are dome-shaped and undergo a color transition from pale green to reddish as development progresses. Upon hatching, the larva undergoes five distinct instars, developing a translucent, greenish body and a contrasting dark head capsule. Pupation occurs inside the protective leaf shelter constructed during the final larval instar, where the chrysalis is secured with a silken girdle until the adult butterfly emerges.
Conservation status: Has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List, but it is generally regarded as a species of Least Concern (LC) across its range. Its high adaptability to urbanized landscapes and widespread utilization of cultivated ornamental plants ensure stable population trends.
