Belongs to a specialized group of mimetic lepidopterans characterized by their striking resemblance to wasps, a classic evolutionary defense strategy known as aposematism. This insect features a bright scarlet-red abdomen on its anterior section, contrasting sharply with metallic blue spots located on the posterior segments. The thorax is predominantly black, adorned with iridescent blue markings. Its wings are mostly transparent or hyaline, lacking the dense scales typical of other moths, with well-defined black margins and a conspicuous black discal spot on the forewing. The antennae are plumose or bipectinate in males, ending in white tips that facilitate field identification. The legs are dark with metallic reflections, and the wingspan typically ranges from 30 to 35 millimeters.
Geographical distribution: Is widely distributed throughout the Neotropical region and the transition zones of the Nearctic. Its geographical range extends from the southern tip of the United States, particularly in the peninsula of Florida, southward through Mexico, Central America (including nations such as Costa Rica and Panamá), the Caribbean islands, down into South America, with well-documented records in Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Brazil, and northern Argentina.
Habitat: Primarily inhabits humid tropical and subtropical forests, forest edges, secondary growth areas, scrublands, and agricultural or peri-urban zones where its host plants thrive. It shows a clear preference for low-altitude environments, although it can also be found in wet premontane zones. Its presence is strongly linked to microclimates with high relative humidity and moderate solar exposure, factors that favor the growth of climbing vines of the aster family.
Feeding: During the larval stage, this specialist herbivore feeds on the foliage of plants in the family Asteraceae, showing a tight association with the genus Mikania, particularly species like Mikania scandens. Adults, on the other hand, feed on wildflower nectar to obtain energy. Additionally, males exhibit specialized pharmacophagous behavior, sucking fluids from decaying plants rich in pyrrolizidine alkaloids (such as Eupatorium species), chemical compounds essential for their defense and chemical signaling.
Behavior: Displays notably diurnal and crepuscular activity, unlike the vast majority of moths. Its flight is erratic and hovering, precisely mimicking the flight patterns of Hymenoptera in the family Vespidae, which deters visual predators such as birds. Males possess specialized organs called coremata, which are inflatable structures covered with glandular scales that they evert to disperse pheromones synthesized from the sequestered alkaloids, attracting females over long distances.
Reproduction: Commences with a complex chemical courtship during which the male transfers a nuptial gift of pyrrolizidine alkaloids to the female during copulation. Females deposit small, spherical egg masses on the underside of the host plants´ leaves. The resulting larvae, densely covered in light-colored urticating setae, pass through several instars before pupating. Upon metamorphosis, the caterpillar spins a silk cocoon interwoven with its own protective hairs to shield the pupa from pathogens and predators, ensuring the survival of the offspring.
Conservation status: Is currently not evaluated globally on the IUCN Red List. However, due to its vast distribution and the abundance of its host plants, it is considered a species of least concern locally across most of its range. Nonetheless, accelerated habitat loss due to deforestation and the indiscriminate use of pesticides in agricultural areas pose an indirect threat to local populations of this remarkable insect.
