Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

This is a slender, medium-sized passerine measuring approximately 5.9 to 6.3 inches (15 to 16 cm) in length and weighing between 25 and 30 grams. Its most diagnostic morphological feature is a prominent, erectile crest on the crown, consisting of elongated feathers with dark central shafts. The upperparts are washed in greyish-brown with conspicuous, dark longitudinal streaking, while the underparts present a whitish-buffy tone with diffuse streaking across the breast. The wings feature bright rufous-cinnamon patches that are highly visible during flight, and the long, rounded tail has dark central rectrices flanked by contrasting rufous outer feathers. It possesses a slender, slightly decurved beak with a horn-grey finish and stands on sturdy, notably pale pinkish-red legs adapted for an active terrestrial lifestyle.

Geographical distribution: This species is endemic to the southern cone of South America, occupying a wide range that includes the northern and central regions of Argentina (from Salta and Formosa down to northern Patagonia), western Paraguay, southeastern Bolivia, western Uruguay, and localized pockets in extreme southern Brazil within the state of Rio Grande do Sul.

Habitat: It primarily inhabits semi-arid and temperate eco-regions, showing a strong affinity for the Gran Chaco biome and the transition zones of the Espinal and Pampas. It is frequently found in thorny scrublands, open dry woodlands dominated by Prosopis and Acacia trees, shrubby steppes, degraded savannas, and rural roadsides with scattered bushes, staying mostly in lowland areas.

Feeding: It maintains a strictly insectivorous diet, preying upon a wide variety of ground-dwelling invertebrates. Its primary food sources include beetles, ants, larvae, spiders, and small grasshoppers. It feeds by actively walking or running across open ground and leaf litter, using its slender bill to flip debris, probe the soil, and search for prey hidden around the roots of thorny shrubs.

Behavior: It is characterized by its highly gregarious and social nature, usually moving in cohesive family groups of 3 to 10 individuals that communicate constantly through dry, metallic, chattering vocalizations. Highly terrestrial, it prefers to run swiftly across the ground rather than fly when confronted by potential threats. When excited or alarmed, it raises its distinct crest and pumps its tail; its flights are typically low, short, and undulating, moving quickly from one patch of cover to another.

Nesting: It constructs massive, conspicuous, and highly complex nests made of interlocking thorny twigs, typically situated in the lower or mid-canopy of thorny trees such as Prosopis. These globular structures can reach up to 3 feet (1 meter) in diameter and feature a specialized, curved entrance tunnel designed to deter predators. The species practices cooperative breeding, where several members of the social group assist the breeding pair in transporting nesting materials, building the structure, and feeding the offspring. The female lays a clutch of 3 to 5 pristine white eggs that are incubated by multiple group members.

Conservation status: It is currently evaluated as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Although it faces localized habitat fragmentation due to agricultural expansion and deforestation within the Chaco region, its populations remain stable because of its high ecological plasticity and ability to colonize degraded woodlands and secondary scrub.
