A medium-sized and compact bird, easily recognized by its sturdy build and fast, direct flight. It exhibits notable plumage variability, a consequence of its long domestication history and close association with urban environments. The typical form shows grayish tones with two dark wing bars and an iridescent sheen on the neck. It has a short bill with a pale cere and reddish legs. Its exceptional adaptability has allowed it to become one of the most widespread city-dwelling birds worldwide.
