This is a small-sized microteiid lizard belonging to the family Gymnophthalmidae, a diverse group of neotropical lizards. This reptile is characterized by an extremely slender body and a remarkably long tail, which can measure up to two and a half times the snout-vent length. In adult individuals, this snout-vent length typically ranges between 35 and 45 millimeters. Its dorsal coloration features a bronze-brown or coppery background, bordered by prominent, light creamy-white or yellowish dorsolateral stripes that run continuously along the sides of the body. The dorsal scales are strongly keeled, imbricate, and organized in regular longitudinal rows, giving the skin a slightly rough texture. This taxon exhibits conspicuous seasonal sexual dimorphism; during the breeding season, males develop vibrant coloration on their flanks and bellies, displaying intense orange, reddish, or pinkish hues, and they possess well-developed femoral pores, which are absent or highly reduced in females.
Geographical distribution: This species is widely distributed across the Southern Cone of South America. Its presence has been well documented in northern and central Argentina, including provinces such as Buenos Aires, Córdoba, Santa Fe, and Corrientes. It is also found throughout the entirety of Uruguay and across vast territories of Paraguay. Furthermore, its range extends into southern and southeastern Brazil, particularly within the states of Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, Paraná, and São Paulo, with additional localized populations in eastern Bolivia.
Habitat: It is closely associated with open and semi-open ecosystems characterized by dense herbaceous and low shrubby vegetation. It represents a typical inhabitant of the temperate Pampean grasslands, the Cerrado savannas, the humid and dry Chaco ecoregions, and transitional forest borders. Within these landscapes, this lizard utilizes specialized microhabitats such as moist leaf litter, rocky crevices, dense grass tussocks, and the sheltered spaces beneath rotting logs, which provide vital thermal refuges and protection from co-occurring predators.
Feeding: Operating as an active and opportunistic predator, its diet consists entirely of small, terrestrial invertebrates. It preys upon a wide variety of ground-dwelling arthropods, including small spiders, ants, beetles, cricket nymphs, collembolans, woodlice, and various insect larvae. Its hunting strategy involves continuous active foraging, utilizing its bifid tongue to detect chemical cues on the substrate, allowing it to efficiently locate prey hidden beneath decomposing organic matter.
Behavior: This saurian displays strictly diurnal activity and is highly heliothermic, actively regulating its internal body temperature by basking in direct sunlight on patches of bare soil, flat rocks, or exposed wooden surfaces during the warmest hours of the day. It possesses cryptozoic habits, spending a significant portion of its time moving discreetly under the dense grass or leaf litter. When threatened, it relies on its agility to dart rapidly into nearby cover; if grabbed, it readily employs caudal autotomy, dropping its writhing tail to distract the predator while the lizard makes its escape.
Reproduction: The reproductive cycle of this microteiid lizard is highly seasonal, precisely synchronized with the rising temperatures and increased rainfall of spring and summer. As an oviparous species, females deposit their clutch in hidden, nesting microenvironments with stable moisture levels, such as beneath flat stones, inside decomposing logs, or in shallow soil crevices. The clutch size is notably small, consistently composed of two soft-shelled, elongated eggs. Hatchlings emerge after an incubation period that depends on ambient temperatures, resembling the adults but displaying sharper, more contrasty color patterns.
Conservation status: On a global scale, this species is classified under the Least Concern (LC) category on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. This assessment is supported by its extensive geographical range, stable local abundance in undisturbed areas, and moderate tolerance to low-intensity environmental disturbances. However, local populations face severe localized threats due to habitat loss and fragmentation driven by intensive agriculture, monoculture forestry, frequent anthropogenic fires, and urban sprawl, which isolate and degrade its natural grassland habitats.
