Description


Characterized by a medium-sized body length measuring between 21 and 26 inches (53 to 66 centimeters), with a wingspan ranging from 59 to 65 inches (150 to 165 centimeters), and a body mass of approximately 2.1 to 3.4 pounds (0.95 to 1.55 kilograms). The plumage is mostly black with a distinct green sheen across the back, contrasting with flight feathers that exhibit pale whitish-gray inner primaries on the underwing surface. The most diagnostic feature is the featherless head and neck, displaying bright skin colors of yellow, orange, pink, and a pale bluish crown. The bill is flesh-colored or pale pink, and the legs are grayish, frequently covered in white uric acid due to urohidrosis. It is distinguished from similar species by its smaller size and specific cranial color patterns.

Geographical distribution: Occurs widely throughout the Neotropical region, ranging from eastern and southern Mexico, down through Central America in countries including Guatemala, Belize, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama, into South America. In the South American continent, it is found across Colombia, Venezuela, the Guianas, Brazil, Paraguay, northern Argentina, and Uruguay. It is restricted to lowlands and coastal plains, rarely exceeding elevations of 3,300 feet (1,000 meters) above sea level, favoring river basins and vast flatlands.

Habitat: Primarily inhabits seasonally flooded savannas, open grasslands, marshes, mangrove edges, and degraded agricultural pastures. Unlike its forest-dwelling relatives, this raptor avoids dense primary rainforests, preferring open and semi-open landscapes where thermal updrafts are easily accessible for low-altitude soaring over the grass canopy.

Feeding: Feeds almost exclusively on carrion, targeting small carcasses of fish, reptiles, amphibians, and small mammals that are exposed by receding waters, agricultural burns, or roadside accidents. Utilizing an extraordinary, highly acute sense of smell, this bird can pinpoint decaying organic matter hidden under thick grass cover, a physical adaptation that sets it apart from many other birds of prey.

Behavior: Typically observed as a solitary forager or in pairs, rarely congregating in large groups except at abundant food sources. It flies relatively low to the ground with its wings held in a shallow dihedral (V-shape), tilting side-to-side to catch scent plumes carried by the wind. Lacking a syrinx, it cannot produce true songs, communicating instead through low hisses, grunts, and wheezes during competitive feeding interactions or defense.

Nesting: Does not construct a physical nest structure of twigs. Instead, eggs are laid directly on the ground, inside hollow logs, decaying tree stumps, or under the protective cover of dense, thorny vegetation. The clutch typically consists of two eggs, which are cream-colored and heavily blotched with reddish-brown spots. Both parents share incubation duties, which last between 32 and 40 days. The altricial chicks are born helpless, covered in white down, and are fed via regurgitation until they fledge at approximately 80 days of age.

Conservation status: Classified as a species of Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Although its global population remains stable due to an incredibly vast distribution range, local populations face threats from habitat destruction, specifically the draining of wetlands and the transformation of native savannas into industrial agricultural fields.
