Description


Belonging to the most robust picids of the Southern Hemisphere, this striking bird is recognized as the largest woodpecker in South America. Individuals of this species measure between 14 and 18 inches (36 to 45 centimeters) in total length and weigh approximately 300 to 363 grams. Outstanding sexual dimorphism is present in their cranial coloration. The male features a magnificent bright crimson-red head, crest, and nape, while the rest of its body is covered in a deep coal-black plumage with a subtle bluish sheen and a white wing patch on the inner flight feathers. Conversely, the female exhibits an almost entirely black plumage, with a small red area restricted to the base of the bill and a long, curly forward-facing crest. Both sexes share pale yellow irises, strong zygodactyl feet designed for vertical tree-climbing, and stiff, pointed tail feathers that serve as an indispensable prop against trunks.

Geographical distribution: This species is endemic to the southwestern strip of South America, inhabiting the southern Andean forests of Chile and Argentina. Its range stretches from the Maule and O´Higgins regions in Chile, and Neuquén province in Argentina, continuing southward through Patagonia to the remote islands of Tierra del Fuego and Cape Horn.

Habitat: It is strictly associated with mature temperate rainforests, specifically subantarctic and Patagonian woodlands. The species requires old-growth forest stands containing large-diameter trees and a high volume of standing deadwood. Its preferred environments are dominated by southern beech trees of the genus Nothofagus, such as coihue (Nothofagus dombeyi), lenga (Nothofagus pumilio), and ñire (Nothofagus antarctica), as well as areas featuring cordilleran cypress (Austrocedrus chilensis).

Feeding: Its diet is highly specialized, consisting primarily of large wood-boring beetle larvae, particularly from the families Cerambycidae and Buprestidae. Using its powerful, chisel-like bill, it strips bark and excavates deep cavities in decaying or dead tree trunks to extract prey with its long, sticky tongue. It opportunistically supplements this diet with spiders, adult insects, tree sap, native wild berries, and occasionally small forest vertebrates such as lizards or nestlings of other bird species.

Behavior: This territorial and monogamous bird lives in stable, small family groups of two to five individuals, typically consisting of the breeding pair and their offspring from previous years. Communication relies on loud, nasal vocalizations and an iconic double-tap drumming pattern on resonant wood, which serves as a long-distance territorial signal and a pair-bonding mechanism. Their flight is undulating and heavy, and they navigate the forest structure by climbing vertically in spiral paths around dominant tree trunks.

Nesting: The breeding season takes place between October and January. Both parents collaborate to excavate a deep nesting cavity in the trunk of a large, living or dead deciduous tree, typically situated at a height of 16 to 49 feet (5 to 15 meters) above the ground. The female lays one or two white eggs, which are incubated by both adults for 15 to 17 days. The altricial chicks are fed by both parents and remain in the nest for about 45 to 50 days, showing an unusually long post-fledging dependence that can last up to two years.

Conservation status: The species is currently listed under the Least Concern (LC) category on the IUCN Red List. However, at regional and national levels, its populations are categorized as Vulnerable or threatened due to severe habitat fragmentation, the loss of mature old-growth forests to logging and agriculture, forest fires, and nest-site competition with invasive species such as the American mink (Neovison vison).
