Description


This is a medium-sized passerine bird belonging to the Icteridae family, measuring approximately 19 to 22 centimeters in length. It possesses a sleek, overall glossy black plumage that contrasts dramatically with a vivid bright yellow patch on its wing coverts (shoulders) and a matching yellow rump. Its bill is sharply pointed, robust, and displays a distinctive pale blue-gray or ivory coloration, while its iris is noticeably pale blue or whitish, which serves as an essential diagnostic feature to distinguish it from similar sympatric species. Sexual dimorphism is minimal regarding plumage coloration, although males are generally slightly larger and heavier than females.

Geographical distribution: The geographical range of this species is widely distributed across the central-southeastern regions of South America. It occurs from central and southern Brazil (including states such as Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, and down to Rio Grande do Sul), extending westward through most of Paraguay, and reaching northern and central Argentina (provinces of Misiones, Corrientes, Chaco, Formosa, Entre Ríos, Santa Fe, and northern Buenos Aires), as well as being present throughout Uruguay.

Habitat: It primarily inhabits the mid-to-high canopy of subtropical and temperate humid forests, gallery forests, dense woodland edges, secondary growth woodlands, and the Atlantic Forest biome. It shows a strong preference for dense vegetated areas that border open clearings or ecotones, and it successfully adapts to wooded parks and semi-open forest environments within the humid Chaco region.

Feeding: It has an omnivorous and opportunistic diet. It feeds on a diverse array of arthropods, including insects, caterpillars, and spiders, which it actively searches for by probing tree bark, crevices, and epiphytes. It complements this protein intake by feeding on wild fruits, seeds, and nectar from various flowers, using its specialized pointed bill to pry open vegetative structures and investigate the interior of bromeliads.

Behavior: It is characterized by its predominantly solitary or paired habits, which sets it apart from other highly gregarious members of its genus. During the non-breeding season, it may occasionally join mixed-species feeding flocks moving through the canopy. It is a highly vocal bird and a remarkable mimic, capable of reproducing the songs and calls of multiple other bird species in its habitat, blending these imitations with its own complex whistles and chattering.

Nesting: Unlike other cacique species that nest in large, noisy colonies, this taxon exhibits a monogamous and solitary breeding behavior. The female constructs a remarkably long, pendulous pouch nest measuring between 40 and 60 centimeters in length, woven from fine plant fibers, mosses, lichens, and beard lichens (Usnea), suspended from the outer twigs of tree branches at heights of 2 to 10 meters above the ground. The clutch typically consists of 2 to 3 white eggs speckled with reddish-brown or purplish spots. Incubation is performed almost exclusively by the female, although both parents actively feed the nestlings. The nests are frequently targeted by brood parasites, such as the Shiny Cowbird (Molothrus bonariensis).

Conservation status: It is currently classified as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List. Although local populations may experience pressure from habitat loss, forest fragmentation, and degradation driven by agricultural expansion, the species maintains an extensive geographical range, and its overall population trend is considered stable across most of its distribution.
