Description

Characterized by a robust morphology, this taxon exhibits a total body length ranging between 45 and 60 millimeters. Its overall coloration varies from yellowish-brown to dark chestnut, featuring dark dorsal patterns that form longitudinal stripes along the prosoma and opisthosoma of Bothriurus bonariensis. The pedipalps are remarkably broad and strong, particularly in males, which possess a distinct spine-like apophysis on the inner surface of the chelae. The metasoma, or tail, consists of well-developed segments ending in a telson equipped with a curved sting and a nearly obsolete subaculear tubercle. While it possesses functional venom glands, its toxicity to humans is considered low, causing only localized pain and swelling without major systemic medical risks.

Geographical distribution: Occurs widely across the Southern Cone of South America. It is highly abundant in central and northern Argentina, spanning the Pampean region and adjacent zones, throughout the entire territory of Uruguay, in the southernmost state of Brazil (primarily Rio Grande do Sul), and in bordering regions of Paraguay.

Habitat: Prefers temperate grasslands, steppes, and shrubby environments. This species is well-adapted to loamy and sandy soils where it can dig shallow retreats. It is frequently found concealed beneath rocks, fallen logs, loose bark, and organic debris. Additionally, it exhibits synanthropic tendencies, successfully colonizing suburban gardens, vacant lots, construction sites, and building foundations in urban areas.

Feeding: Sustains an exclusively carnivorous diet as a generalist predator. It feeds on a diverse array of terrestrial invertebrates, such as crickets, cockroaches, beetles, spiders, and other small arthropods. It hunts actively at night, utilizing specialized sensory hairs (trichobothria) on its pedipalps to detect substrate vibrations caused by potential prey. Once captured, the prey is tightly secured by the powerful chelae, and the metasoma is arched to inject a paralyzing venom that facilitates extra-oral digestion.

Behavior: Displays strictly nocturnal and solitary habits. During daylight hours, it remains sheltered inside shallow self-dug burrows or natural crevices to minimize desiccation and evade predators. It is a highly territorial organism that avoids conspecific contact outside the mating period. When threatened, it assumes a defensive posture by raising its pedipalps and arching its tail forward, though it typically seeks retreat rather than physical confrontation.

Reproduction: Initiates its reproductive cycle during the warm seasons of spring and summer. Mating in Bothriurus bonariensis involves an intricate courtship dance known as the promenade à deux, during which the male grasps the female’s pedipalps and maneuvers her back and forth to find a suitable surface. The male then deposits a spermatophore on the ground and guides the female over it so she can take it into her genital operculum. It is a viviparous species, with a gestation period lasting several months. The offspring are born live and immediately climb onto the mother´s back, remaining there for protection until their first molt, after which they disperse.

Conservation status: Currently, this species has not been evaluated by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). However, it remains highly common and abundant throughout its distribution range, facing no major immediate threats, though pesticide application and habitat loss from urban sprawl can impact local populations.
