Conservation Status: Globally, the species is classified as Near Threatened (NT). Although current populations are substantially larger than they were at the end of the nineteenth century, the species still faces challenges related to population fragmentation, reduced genetic diversity, diseases transmitted by domestic livestock, and habitat loss. Conservation programs, genetic management, and prairie restoration efforts have been essential in preventing extinction and continue to play a vital role in ensuring its long-term survival.
