The ventral side is noticeably paler, sporting a complex pattern of brown, gray, and tan shades that echo the upperside´s reddish band in a more muted tone. The caterpillar stage is defined by a body adorned with branched, spine-like structures (scoli) that vary in color from greenish-yellow to dull brown, helping the larva blend seamlessly with host foliage. The pupa resembles a curved, dried leaf, showing a pale green or grayish hue with subtle brown markings that provide exceptional camouflage against predators.
Geographical distribution: Occurs extensively throughout the Neotropical realm, spanning from the southern tip of Texas in the United States, southward through Mexico and all of Central America, and deep into South America. It is documented in countries such as Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Paraguay, Brazil, and northern Argentina, indicating a vast ecological tolerance across diverse latitudes.
Habitat: Primarily frequents disturbed forest ecosystems, tropical rainforest edges, secondary growth woodlands, shrubby fields, riparian corridors, and urban gardens. It is most abundant in lowland environments, although its altitudinal distribution extends from sea level up to approximately 1,500 meters above sea level, showing a clear preference for sunny, open areas where its larval host plants are abundant.
Feeding: Adults are saprophagous and frugivorous, primarily feeding on rotting fruit, fermenting tree sap, and organic matter, though they may occasionally visit flowers for nectar. As larvae, they are specialized herbivores that feed exclusively on the foliage of plants in the spurge family, Euphorbiaceae, displaying a strict evolutionary relationship with the genera Tragia and Dalechampia, whose chemical defenses are tolerated by the caterpillar.
Behavior: Displays a slow, fluttering, and somewhat erratic flight pattern, usually remaining close to the ground or within the understory vegetation. Males exhibit highly territorial behavior, perching on sunlit leaves about 1 to 2 meters above the ground to monitor the surroundings and actively pursue passing females. During peak daylight hours, individuals are frequently seen basking with their wings fully outspread to absorb solar radiation and optimize their metabolic activity.
Reproduction: Begins with complex courtship flights initiated by territorial males. Following successful copulation, the female deposits her eggs singly on the underside of young leaves of the host plants, specifically Tragia or Dalechampia. The solitary larvae feed continuously, avoiding predators through cryptosis and their spiny physical defenses, eventually selecting a secure stem or leaf understory to form a pupa, completing their metamorphosis within a few weeks depending on ambient temperature.
Conservation status: Has not been formally evaluated by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Due to its extensive geographical distribution, relative abundance, and high tolerance for disturbed or human-modified environments, the species is generally considered secure and faces no immediate threat of global extinction.
