Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

Is a medium-sized, ground-dwelling passerine that primarily inhabits the dense understory of humid montane environments. This bird measures between 19 and 20 centimeters in length and weighs approximately 40 to 52 grams. It exhibits a highly striking head pattern, featuring a grey central crown stripe bordered by broad black lateral crown stripes, and a prominent white supercilium that runs from the base of the bill to the nape. The upperparts are mostly greyish-olive, while the underparts are bright white, contrasting sharply with a solid, well-defined black pectoral band. The flanks and sides of the breast are washed with grey. It possesses a sturdy jet-black bill and reddish-brown eyes. Sexes are monomorphic, showing no significant differences in plumage or size between males and females.

Geographical distribution: Occurs along the eastern slope of the Andes, spanning a geographic range that extends from central Peru (including Huánuco, Pasco, Junín, Cusco, and Puno) southward through Bolivia (La Paz, Cochabamba, Santa Cruz, Chuquisaca, and Tarija) to northwestern Argentina (in the provinces of Jujuy, Salta, Tucumán, and Catamarca).

Habitat: Inhabits the damp understory of humid montane forests, cloud forests, forest edges, and mature secondary growth woodlands. It is frequently associated with steep ravines, dense shrubbery, and thickets of bamboo within the genus Chusquea, typically occurring within an elevational range of 1,500 to 3,200 meters above sea level, where leaf litter is abundant.

Feeding: Maintains an omnivorous and opportunistic diet, foraging primarily on the ground. It consumes wild seeds, small berries, and various fruits from low-growing shrubs. A substantial portion of its diet consists of terrestrial invertebrates, such as beetles, ants, spiders, caterpillars, and insect larvae, which it uncovers by actively scratching and clearing away leaf litter with its feet.

Behavior: Characterized by its highly secretive, shy, and terrestrial nature. It is typically observed singly or in monogamous pairs, rarely participating in mixed-species foraging flocks. It spends most of the day concealed within dense vegetation near the forest floor, and its presence is most often detected by its vocalization, which consists of high-pitched, metallic, and thin whistling notes delivered from low, hidden perches.

Nesting: Constructs a bulky cup-shaped nest made of dry leaves, twigs, plant fibers, moss, and fern fragments, lined internally with finer grasses and animal hair. This structure is situated very low, usually less than one meter above the ground, tucked away in dense ferns, tussocks, or low shrubs along ravines. The typical clutch consists of 2 eggs that are pale bluish-white with reddish-brown speckles concentrated at the larger end. Incubation is performed chiefly by the female for a period of 14 to 16 days, while both parents actively participate in provisioning and protecting the altricial chicks.

Conservation status: Classified as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List. Although the species has a relatively stable population and a wide distribution range, localized populations are increasingly threatened by habitat fragmentation and forest degradation caused by agricultural expansion and logging in the Andean cloud forests.
