Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

Characterized by its elegant, slender build and a total length of approximately 15 to 16.5 centimeters. This medium-sized passerine is instantly recognizable by its vibrant saffron-yellow to bright orange bill, occasionally marked with a subtle blackish tone along the culmen. The head pattern is highly striking, featuring a distinct jet-black mask contrasted by a crisp white supercilium and a prominent greyish-white median crown stripe running over the cap. Its throat is a immaculate pure white, bordered below by a solid, complete black breast band or collar that serves as a diagnostic field mark. The upperparts, including the back, mantle, and rump, are covered in an olive-green plumage, while the underparts present a pale grey to whitish coloration, blending into olive-brown along the flanks. No significant sexual dimorphism is observed, with males and females sharing identical plumage characteristics.

Geographical distribution: Occurs primarily along the eastern slopes of the Andes, stretching from central and southern Bolivia (specifically across the departments of Cochabamba, Santa Cruz, Chuquisaca, and Tarija) southward into northwestern Argentina (reaching the provinces of Jujuy, Salta, Tucumán, Catamarca, and extending down to northern San Juan and La Rioja).

Habitat: Inhabits the lower strata of humid montane forests, transitional zones of the Yungas cloud forests, and semi-deciduous mountain woodlands. It is frequently encountered in densely vegetated ravines, thick second-growth scrub, and the margins of drier Chaco woodlands, typically spanning an elevational range from 500 to 2,500 meters above sea level.

Feeding: Maintains an omnivorous and opportunistic diet, primarily foraging on the ground to consume small invertebrates, insect larvae, beetles, and spiders. It also feeds heavily on a wide variety of wild seeds scattered in the leaf litter, supplementing its nutritional needs with ripe berries and small fruits gathered from low-growing shrubs.

Behavior: Exhibits highly terrestrial and secretive habits, moving mostly as solitary individuals or in pairs by hopping quietly through the dense undergrowth and leaf litter. Because of its shy nature, it prefers to remain concealed within thick vegetation, making visual detection difficult. However, its presence is regularly betrayed by its song, which consists of high-pitched, thin, metallic notes delivered from low perches within the shrubbery.

Nesting: Constructs a neat, cup-shaped nest made of vegetable fibers, fine rootlets, dry leaves, and moss, positioned close to the ground inside dense thorny bushes or nestled directly on the forest floor beneath protective foliage. The female typically lays a clutch of 2 to 3 eggs, which are pale blue or dull white, heavily speckled with reddish-brown or purplish spots concentrated at the larger end. Both parents actively share the duties of incubating the eggs and feeding the altricial nestlings.

Conservation status: Classified as a species of Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, as its overall population remains stable and faces no immediate widespread threats across its specialized Andean range, although localized habitat degradation due to agricultural expansion and deforestation poses a continuous challenge to its regional populations.
