Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

Exhibits a breathtaking color contrast, characterized by brilliant turquoise-blue upperparts and intense golden-yellow underparts. This large Neotropical parrot reaches a total body length ranging from 81 to 86 centimeters and a body mass of approximately 900 to 1500 grams. Its forehead displays a subtle olive-green coloration, while the bare facial patch consists of white skin adorned with fine lines of black feathers. The exceptionally strong bill, adapted for crushing hard shells, is entirely black, as is the throat area. It does not exhibit obvious sexual dimorphism, making males and females virtually indistinguishable by external appearance.

Geographical distribution: Spans across a vast portion of the Amazon Basin and adjacent regions in South America. Its natural range extends from eastern Panama, through Colombia, Venezuela, the Guianas, Ecuador, Peru, and southward through Brazil, Bolivia, and northern Paraguay. While historically abundant throughout most of this territory, localized populations have suffered severe declines or extinctions, particularly in fragmented habitats near the northern and southern fringes of its range.

Habitat: Primarily frequents lowland tropical rainforests, gallery forests, humid savannas, and areas with dense stands of palm trees, especially those of the genus Mauritia. It prefers forest edges and areas near freshwater bodies such as rivers and swamps, generally avoiding the deep, continuous interior of primary forests. It is highly adapted to life in the forest canopy, where it roosts, feeds, and finds shelter from predators.

Feeding: Maintains a frugivorous and granivorous diet, feeding on a wide variety of fruits, seeds, nuts, and flowers from diverse tree species, with a notable preference for the fruits of palms like Mauritia flexuosa. Its robust beak allows it to crack extremely hard endocarps that are inaccessible to other avian species. Additionally, this taxon is frequently observed consuming clay on exposed riverbanks, a geophagic behavior that assists in neutralizing toxic plant compounds and absorbing essential dietary minerals.

Behavior: Represents a highly social and gregarious species, typically traveling in lifelong monogamous pairs or noisy flocks containing up to dozens of individuals. Mated pairs remain together constantly and fly in close proximity, with wingtips almost touching during flight. They communicate using extremely loud, harsh, and screeching vocalizations that can carry over great distances across the canopy. It is strictly diurnal, leaving roosting sites at sunrise to travel to feeding grounds and returning to communal roosts at dusk.

Nesting: Occurs generally between December and May, varying according to latitude. This process takes place in natural cavities of tall trees, showing a strong preference for dead palm trunks, which provide excellent visibility and safety from terrestrial predators. The female typically lays two to three white eggs, which she incubates for approximately 24 to 28 days while the male provides food. The chicks hatch blind and featherless, remaining in the nest cavity for 90 to 100 days before fledging, though they remain dependent on parental care for several additional months.

Conservation status: Is classified as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List due to its expansive geographic distribution. Nonetheless, wild populations face severe localized threats driven by habitat loss from agricultural deforestation, the selective logging of nesting palm trees, and the persistent illegal wildlife trade for the pet market, which has already resulted in extirpations across several regions of its historical range.
