Description


It is one of the most familiar and extensively studied lizards of the Caribbean and many regions where it has been introduced, largely due to its remarkable adaptability to both natural and urban environments. Anolis sagrei possesses a slender body, a long tail, relatively elongated limbs, and specialized adhesive toe pads that allow it to move efficiently across tree trunks, branches, walls, fences, and numerous other surfaces. Its coloration is variable, generally consisting of shades of brown, gray, olive, and tan, often accompanied by darker markings or irregular patterns. Males are typically larger than females and display a conspicuous orange to reddish dewlap that plays a central role in territorial and reproductive displays. The species can slightly alter the intensity of its coloration, a feature that contributes to visual communication and camouflage.

Geographic Distribution: Its native range includes Cuba, the Bahamas, and several nearby Caribbean islands. However, through accidental and intentional human-mediated introductions, the species has become established far beyond its original distribution. Breeding populations now occur in numerous parts of North America, Central America, additional Caribbean islands, and other tropical and subtropical regions around the world. The expansion of its range has been facilitated by the transportation of ornamental plants, construction materials, and commercial goods.

Habitat: It occupies a broad variety of habitats, including dry forests, forest edges, shrublands, urban parks, gardens, agricultural areas, disturbed habitats, and suburban landscapes. The species generally uses lower vegetation layers, frequently perching on shrubs, fallen logs, fences, walls, and other structures near the ground. Its high tolerance of human disturbance allows it to thrive in heavily modified environments, where population densities can become remarkably high. Suitable shelter, basking sites, and abundant invertebrate prey are important factors for successful establishment.

Diet: It is primarily insectivorous and feeds on a wide variety of small arthropods. Common prey includes ants, beetles, flies, crickets, spiders, moths, and other invertebrates, although it may occasionally consume small vertebrates, reptile eggs, or limited amounts of plant material. It is a visual predator that actively searches for prey and launches rapid attacks at short range. This opportunistic feeding behavior enables the species to exploit food resources efficiently in a wide range of habitats.

Behavior: This species is diurnal, active, and strongly territorial. Males establish and defend territories through visual displays, head-bobbing movements, and dewlap extensions. These signals are important both in territorial defense and courtship. Individuals spend much of the day moving among low perches while searching for food or basking to regulate body temperature. When threatened, they typically retreat into vegetation or escape through rapid and agile movements. Behavioral flexibility and an exceptional ability to adapt to urban environments have contributed significantly to the species´ ecological success.

Reproduction: Reproductive activity may continue through much of the year in warm climates. Males actively compete for access to females through displays and direct confrontations. After mating, females deposit single eggs or small series of eggs in protected locations, often beneath vegetation, logs, rocks, or within loose soil. Unlike many reptiles that produce large clutches, this species lays eggs repeatedly throughout the breeding season. Incubation depends largely on environmental conditions, and no parental care is provided after oviposition. Hatchlings emerge fully independent and begin feeding shortly after hatching.

Conservation Status: Globally, it is classified as Least Concern (LC) due to its extensive distribution, abundance, and extraordinary adaptability. In many regions it is considered an invasive species because of its successful expansion beyond its native range and its potential effects on native reptile and invertebrate communities. Although it faces no major threats at a global scale, the conservation of the native ecosystems in which it evolved remains important for preserving regional biodiversity.
