Description: It is a small arboreal lizard belonging to the family Dactyloidae, characteristic of the Andean forests of Colombia. It possesses a slender body, a long tail, and well-developed limbs that allow agile movement through branches, trunks, and vegetation. Like other members of the genus Anolis, it has specialized adhesive toe pads that facilitate climbing on vertical surfaces and smooth leaves. Its coloration varies from brown and olive tones to greenish hues, providing effective camouflage within forest vegetation. Males generally display a larger and more conspicuous expandable dewlap than females, which is used during territorial and reproductive displays. Although this species remains less studied than many other Neotropical anoles, its morphology reflects remarkable adaptation to life in montane forest habitats. Like many tropical lizards, it may exhibit color changes associated with physiological condition, temperature, and social interactions.
Geographic Distribution: Anolis quimbaya is endemic to Colombia, where it has been recorded primarily in the central Andean region. Its known distribution is associated with mountainous areas containing remnants of humid forests and secondary vegetation. Because the species was described relatively recently and remains poorly studied, its actual range may be broader than currently documented. Available records nevertheless indicate a strong association with mid-elevation Andean ecosystems. Its presence contributes to the exceptional reptile diversity that characterizes the tropical Andes.
Habitat: This species primarily inhabits humid montane forests, secondary forests, forest edges, and areas with dense vegetation cover. Individuals are frequently observed on trunks, low branches, shrubs, and leaves within the understory and middle vegetation layers. It favors habitats with high humidity and complex vegetation structure that provide shelter, thermoregulation sites, and abundant prey resources. In some regions it appears capable of tolerating moderate habitat disturbance, provided essential forest elements remain available. The conservation of forest corridors is important for maintaining connectivity among populations.
Diet: It is an insectivorous predator that feeds mainly on small arthropods. Its diet includes insects, spiders, larvae, and other invertebrates found on vegetation and tree surfaces. Hunting behavior typically involves periods of observation followed by rapid movements toward detected prey. Excellent vision allows individuals to identify subtle movements and respond with precision. Like other anoles, it plays an important ecological role in the natural regulation of invertebrate populations, helping maintain ecosystem balance.
Behavior: The species is primarily diurnal. During periods of peak activity it may be observed basking in forest openings or moving through vegetation while searching for food. Males maintain territories and defend them through visual displays involving head-bobbing, body postures, and dewlap extension. These signals help reduce direct physical confrontations and facilitate communication among individuals. When threatened, it usually retreats quickly into dense vegetation or moves to less exposed locations. Its cryptic coloration and discreet habits often make it difficult to detect even where it occurs regularly.
Reproduction: Like other members of the genus Anolis, it reproduces sexually through internal fertilization. During the breeding season, males intensify territorial and courtship displays to attract females. After mating, females typically lay one or two eggs at a time in protected locations with suitable moisture, such as leaf litter, soft soil, or natural cavities. Embryos develop using the nutritional reserves contained within the egg until hatching. Hatchlings emerge fully independent and immediately begin searching for food and shelter. Growth proceeds through a series of molts until sexual maturity is reached.
Conservation Status: The species has not been among the most comprehensively evaluated reptiles globally, and information regarding population size and trends remains limited. Nevertheless, like many Andean endemic species, it may be vulnerable to habitat loss and fragmentation, agricultural expansion, urban development, and other land-use changes. The protection of Andean forests and the development of additional ecological studies are essential for improving knowledge of its conservation status and ensuring the long-term persistence of its populations.
