Ochre-breasted Foliage-gleaner

Belongs to the family Furnariidae, measuring approximately 16 to 17.5 centimeters in length and weighing between 21 and 26 grams. Its plumage is characterized by warm olive-brown upperparts that contrast elegantly with a bright rufous-chestnut rump and tail. The most defining diagnostic feature of this taxon is its underparts, highlighting a prominent ochre-buff breast and throat that fades into olive-grayish tones along the flanks. On its face, it displays a distinct pale buff post-ocular stripe and a matching orbital ring that contrasts with darker ear coverts. The bill is relatively short, stout, and wedge-shaped, featuring a pale grayish-horn color, highly adapted for probing dead forest foliage.

Geographical distribution: Occupies a specialized range within the Atlantic Forest biome of South America. Its distribution extends through eastern and southeastern Brazil (from southern Bahia and Minas Gerais southwards to Rio Grande do Sul), eastern Paraguay, and northeastern Argentina, where it is primarily restricted to the humid forests of the Misiones province.

Habitat: Primarily frequents the understory and mid-story levels of humid subtropical and tropical forests, semi-deciduous woodlands, and mature secondary growth forests. It is typically found at elevations ranging from sea level up to 1000 meters, showing a strong preference for shady, damp forest interiors with high concentrations of epiphytes, vines, and suspended dead leaf clusters.

Feeding: Strictly insectivorous, focusing its diet on a diverse array of arthropods, beetles, spiders, insect larvae, and small orthopterans. It exhibits a highly specialized foraging technique known as foliage-gleaning, which involves meticulously searching through suspended dead leaves, scanning crevices in tree bark, and probing the centers of bromeliads to extract hidden prey using its specialized bill.

Behavior: Displays highly active and acrobatic movements, frequently hopping along horizontal branches and hanging upside down to inspect the undersides of decaying foliage. It is a nuclear or regular participant in mixed-species foraging flocks, moving alongside other insectivorous understory birds. It is a monogamous and highly territorial species, communicating through sharp, metallic chirping calls and trills used to defend its feeding territory.

Nesting: Establishes its nest inside cavities, utilizing natural tree hollows in decaying wood or abandoned woodpecker holes. The nesting chamber is lined with soft materials, including dry plant fibers, moss, and skeletal leaf fragments. The female typically lays a clutch of 2 to 3 plain white eggs, which are incubated by both parents, who also share duties in brooding and feeding the altricial nestlings.

Conservation status: Classified as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Although it is not currently considered globally threatened, its populations are experiencing localized declines due to ongoing habitat fragmentation, logging, and agricultural conversion of its native Atlantic Forest habitat, which limits the availability of mature understory structures.
