Estado de conservación según BirdLife International: Preocupación Menor

Descripción

Characterized as a medium-sized shorebird, this species measures approximately 22 to 24 centimeters in length. It is easily recognized by its striking, high-contrast plumage pattern consisting of black, white, and grey tones. A prominent black breast band extends around the neck, joining a distinct V-shaped black mantle on its back. The forehead, throat, nape, and underparts are pristine white, while the wing coverts show a soft grey hue when perched. A key diagnostic anatomical feature is the sharp black carpal spur located on the bend of each wing, which is actively used in territorial defense. The bird features a conspicuous, bright red eye-ring that matches its long, pinkish-red legs, contrasting sharply with its short, dark bill.

Geographical distribution: Occurs widely across the lowland regions of South America, predominantly east of the Andes. Its distribution range encompasses major river basins throughout Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Paraguay, the Guianas, northern Argentina, and a vast territory within Brazil, covering the massive Amazon, Orinoco, and Paraná-Paraguay basins.

Habitat: Is closely tied to freshwater aquatic ecosystems in tropical and subtropical zones. Preferred environments include sandy and gravel riverbanks, river islands, lake margins, mudflats, and occasionally seasonally flooded savannas. It strongly favors open areas with minimal vegetation, which grant excellent visibility to detect incoming predators from a distance.

Feeding: Sustains itself on a primarily insectivorous diet. It actively consumes a diverse array of aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates, such as beetles, ants, dipteran larvae, small crustaceans, mollusks, and spiders. It feeds using a classic run-and-pause technique typical of plovers, making rapid dashes across wet sand or mud before pausing abruptly to peck at prey detected visually on the substrate surface.

Behavior: Is typically observed singly, in pairs, or in small family units, rarely congregating in large flocks. Highly territorial and vigilant, it reacts to intruders by performing a rhythmic head-bobbing motion accompanied by loud, metallic piping calls. Its flight is uniquely buoyant and butterfly-like, characterized by deliberate, deep wingbeats that showcase its bold wing pattern.

Nesting: Breeds during the dry season when falling water levels expose suitable sandbars and river beaches. The nest is a simple, shallow scrape in the sand or gravel, occasionally lined with tiny pebbles, shell fragments, or debris. The female typically lays 2 to 3 eggs, which are superbly camouflaged with dark brown and grey speckles over a sandy or olive base. Both parents share incubation duties and defend the nest site aggressively, employing sophisticated distraction displays—such as simulating a broken wing—to lure potential predators away.

Conservation status: Is currently listed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List. Although the global population is considered stable due to its extensive geographical range, local populations face notable threats from habitat degradation, particularly river damming for hydroelectric projects that permanently submerge nesting beaches, gold mining pollution, and human disturbance along recreational riverbanks.
